Trinity College's Spencer Fetter threw five touchdown passes and the Bantams defeated the Hamilton College Continentals 34-7 at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity remained undefeated in the NESCAC at 4-0 as the Bantams rolled up 33 first downs and 543 yards of offense. Trinity was 8 of 12 on third down conversions, converted its lone fourth down attempt, and had the ball for nearly 40 minutes.
The Continentals evened their record at 2-2 in the conference. Hamilton averaged 16.7 yards per pass completion and ended up with 273 yards of offense. The Continentals, who were celebrating Fallcoming and Family Weekend on campus, remain at home on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they take on 4-0 Williams College at 1:30 p.m.
Joe Cairns '25 started at quarterback for Hamilton and was 10 of 33 for 176 yards.
Matt Banbury '23 relieved Cairns in the fourth quarter and led the Continentals on their scoring drive by completing all five passes for 74 yards.
Drew Granski '22 had a team-high four receptions for 45 yards, and
Saleh Eltayeb '24 led Hamilton with 64 yards receiving.
Mike Cairns '22 forced a fumble that was recovered by the Continentals late in the second quarter and he had a short return of a blocked 30-yard field goal attempt by the Bantams early in the fourth. Cairns is the reigning NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week.Â
Christian Snell '23 and
George Johnson '23 led all players with nine tackles apiece. Snell tied a career-high with those nine stops, including six solo.
Fetter was 29 of 34 for 330 yards for Trinity. Jonathan Girard recorded 11 receptions for 153 yards with three touchdown grabs. William Kirby gained 102 yards on just 18 carries and added six catches for 50 yards and a score. Joseph Lepore was credited with 2.5 sacks and Darren Warren finished with two of the Bantams' seven pass breakups.
Hamilton avoided the shutout on its last drive of the afternoon when Banbury led the Continentals on an eight-play, 90-yard march. He completed all five of his passes and also had an eight-yard run. After Banbury was sacked, Hamilton called a timeout facing third-and-17 with 11 seconds left. Banbury lined up in the shotgun and lofted a perfect pass to Eltayeb in the middle of the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown with 5.4 seconds remaining. The touchdown pass and reception were the first with the Continentals for both players.
Hamilton's second-best scoring chance came in the final minute of the second quarter when Cairns completed a 25-yard pass to
Will Budington '22 down at the Trinity 13. The Continentals eventually settled for a 37-yard field goal that missed wide left.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Bantams scored 20 points in the second. Fetter opened the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown pass to DeVante Reid 51 seconds into the quarter. Fetter ended a 99-yard drive with a 27-yard TD toss to Girard with 7:57 to go, and he found Girard again for a 16-yard score with 3:23 left.
Trinity took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 91 yards in 10 plays. Once again, the scoring drive ended with a pass from Fetter to Girard, this time for 14 yards with 9:24 remaining in the third quarter. The Bantams' final scoring drive lasted nearly six minutes and was capped by a six-yard pass from Fetter to Kirby with 2:23 to go in the third. The score remained 34-0 until the final seconds.
