Hawthorn '25, Kantrowitz ’25 score in OT win against No. 5 Oneonta

Hamilton College's Charles Hawthorn '25 scored the match-winning goal in sudden-victory overtime and lifted the Continentals to a 2-1 non-conference victory over the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons on Wednesday afternoon at Hamilton's Love Field.

The Continentals (3-6-1 overall) handed nationally ranked No. 5 Oneonta (8-1-1) its first loss of the season and broke their eight-match win streak. Hamilton out-shot Oneonta 23-19, but the Red Dragons had an 11-5 edge on corner kicks.

Ben Ziegler '24 recorded five saves and Onenota's Nate Hanna made 10. Luke Peplowski '25 led the Continentals with four shots including three on goal and Hawthorn had three shots on goal. Greg Zimmerman '22 and Luke Ehrenfreund '25 had two shots on goal apiece.

In the 96th minute Pandelis Margaronis '25 passed the ball to Peplowski near midfield. Peplowski launched the ball to the top right of the 18-yard box and with a one-kick leap, Hawthorn shot it into the top right corner for the winner.

Peplowski had back-to-back headers in front of the net after a corner kick in the 30th minute. The first was saved by Hanna and the other was a team save. Hawthorn had a chance in the 35th minute but Hanna made a diving save.

Oneonta had a chance in the 34th minute but hit the post. Both teams recorded eight shots in the first half but they went into halftime locked in a scoreless tie.

Oneonta capitalized on a penalty kick in the 56th minute. Tristan Battistoni scored after misdirecting Ziegler to the right but actually shot into the bottom left portion of the net.

Thomas Kantrowitz '25 tied the score in the 81st minute. Sam Webber '23 took a corner kick from the right side and played it into the right side of the box. Peplowski found it in the scramble and shot it across the middle of the box from the ground where Kantrowitz put it in the top-right corner.

Hawthorn had another opportunity to score in the 84th minute but Hanna saved it and the teams headed into overtime. The Continentals had three chances in the 93rd minute. Both Zimmerman and Luke O'Dowd '25 directed shots to the bottom left but Hanna made the saves, and Peplowski shot high off the rebound.

Hamilton will host Bowdoin College for a NESCAC match on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1:30 p.m.
