Amherst shuts out the Continentals 21-0 in Massachusetts

Amherst College's defense intercepted four passes and recorded seven sacks as the Mammoths posted a 21-0 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Amherst's Pratt Field on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton is now 2-4 in the conference. The Continentals gained 305 yards of offense and recovered two Mammoth fumbles, but they were also flagged nine times. Hamillton hosts 1-5 Tufts University on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.

Amherst (4-2 NESCAC) finished with 301 yards on offense. Ricky Goodson returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Quarterback Brad Breckenridge scored on a one-yard plunge earlier in the second and the Mammoths led 14-0 at the break. Louie Eckelkamp completed the scoring with a 33-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Conor Kennelly made all three of his extra-point attempts.

Joe Cairns '25 started at quarterback for the Continentals and was 12 of 23 for 180 yards. Will Budington '22, who is from Amherst, Mass., caught a career-high eight passes and racked up 87 yards receiving. Mike Cairns '22 led the Hamilton defense with 12 tackles. Cairns is third in the NESCAC with 9.5 tackles per game.

Breckenridge was 13 of 22 for 156 yards with the rushing touchdown. Kellen Field ran 22 times for 88 yards, and Carson Ochsenhi led the Mammoths with 51 yards receiving. Tim Swope was credited with a team-high seven tackles and Goodson ended up with three pass breakups.

The Continentals didn't make it into Amherst territory until late in the second quarter. A 16-yard pass from Cairns to Budington set up a 30-yard field goal attempt that hit the right upright and was no good. Hamilton didn't reach the red zone again until its last possession in the fourth quarter. Matt Banbury '23 led the Continentals on a drive from their own six as he was 4 of 6 passing for 36 yards and ran for 45 more. Time finally ran out on Banbury and Hamilton after the Continentals made it all the way down to the Mammoths' three-yard line.
