Tufts University's Sal LoCoco, Tyler Johnson and Spencer Alligood all made big plays late as the Jumbos rallied for an improbable 30-24 NESCAC win in overtime against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Continentals (2-5 NESCAC) play their final home game of 2021 against Middlebury College on Saturday, Nov. 6. The latest installment of the Old Rocking Chair Classic will kick off at 12:30 p.m.
LoCoco booted a 41-yard field as time ran out in the fourth quarter, Johnson put Tufts ahead in overtime with a one-yard touchdown run, and Alligood ended the game with an interception on Hamilton's overtime possession. The Jumbos have won their last two games after they opened the season with five straight losses.
The Continentals went to overtime for the first time since the 2017 opener on Sept. 16 -- also against Tufts -- as the Jumbos prevailed 35-28. Tufts has won five of the past six games in the series between the teams.
Hamilton finished with 355 yards of offense.
Joe Cairns '25 was 15 of 25 passing for 276 yards with a touchdown and averaged more than 18 yards per completion.
Joe Park '23 ran for 46 yards and two touchdowns, and
Vince Reph '24 led the team with 88 receiving yards. Park's touchdowns were his first two this season and he has 12 for his career with the Continentals.
Jack Parker '23 was credited with a career-high 10 tackles and
Slade Springer '23 came up with his first career sack and forced a fumble for Hamilton.
Christian Snell '23 broke up four passes and
Mike Cairns '22, who is third in the NESCAC in tackles per game, made nine stops.
Quinn Voboril '22 nearly was the hero for the Continentals in his first game as the team's kicker. Voboril's 20-yard field goal with 23.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave Hamilton a 24-21 lead. Voboril was perfect on his three extra-point attempts and three of his five kickoffs went for touchbacks.
The Jumbos posted 32 first downs and 495 yards of offense, and they were 11 of 18 on third down conversions. Michael Berluti was 29 of 48 for 311 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 73 yards on just nine carries. Philip Lutz had 10 catches for 144 yards and both of Billy Dunn's receptions went for touchdowns. Matty Drouillard led the team with nine tackles, including four for loss, and two sacks.
The Continentals never trailed until overtime. Park bulled over the right side of the line and into the end zone from two yards out with 8:02 remaining in the first quarter as Hamilton converted on its first possession. A 35-yard pass to
Saleh Eltayeb '24 put the Continentals in position. An 11-yard touchdown pass to Dunn with 13:04 to go in the second quarter drew Tufts even and capped an 18-play, 95 yard drive that took more than seven minutes off the clock.
Hamilton went back in front on its next drive. Park scored from the three with 8:17 left when he was stopped in the middle of the line, spun to his left and found an open path to the end zone.
Drew Granski '22 had a 33-yard reception that put the Continentals deep in Jumbos territory.
Hamilton blocked a 22-yard field goal on Tufts' next possession and took over on its own 20. Two plays later, Jumbos linebacker Tyler Roach tipped Cairns' pass to himself at the 10 and waltzed into the end zone with 3:52 remaining. The Jumbos missed a 26-yard field goal wide left in the final seconds of the half and the teams went into the locker room tied at 14-14.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Continentals went back in the lead 1:58 into the fourth. Tufts was flagged for defensive pass interference on third down and that gave Hamilton a first down at the Jumbos 21. On the next play Cairns fired one over the middle to Granski who caught it inside the five and raced into the end zone. Tufts responded on its next drive, which was capped by a 46-yard bomb from Berluti to Dunn with 8:38 to go.
The Jumbos turned the ball over on downs at the Hamilton 31 on their next drive and the Continentals drove 67 yards in eight plays for the go-ahead field goal. A 53-yard pass-and-catch by Reph set up Hamilton at the Tufts eight. It took the Jumbos just three plays to get into field goal range, and LoCoco sent the game into overtime.
