Wesleyan University's Audrey Lavey scored a goal and added an assist as the Cardinals handed the Hamilton College Continentals their first loss with a 3-0 decision in NESCAC action at Wesleyan's Jackson Field on Saturday.
Nationally ranked No. 11 Hamilton (10-1-2, 7-1-2 NESCAC) finished the regular season with 23 points and they are currently in second place in the conference standings. All the other NESCAC teams still have at least one conference match left to play as the last contests are played next Tuesday.
The Continentals will either be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the eight-team 2021 NESCAC Women's Soccer Championship and will host a quarterfinal for the first time on Saturday, Oct. 30. Hamilton travels to Mount Saint Mary College for a non-conference match on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
The 17th-ranked Cardinals (11-1-0, 8-1) leapfrogged the Continentals into first place in the conference standings with their fifth straight victory. Grace Devanny was credited with two assists and Sarah Hammond picked up the shutout by making three saves.
Hamilton was whistled for a handball in front of its own goal just 2:15 into the first half and Melissa Wilhelm converted the penalty kick. The ominous start for the Continentals was a sign of things to come. Lavey's goal made it 2-0 a mere 49 seconds into the second half, and Andrea Chiappetti clinched the win with her goal in the 62nd minute.
Caity Smith '23 stopped two shots for Hamilton.
