Stafford '23 scores for No. 20 field hockey in loss to Williams

All five Hamilton losses are against teams currently ranked in top 12

Williams College's Shea van den Broek posted a goal and two assists and the Ephs used a big second half en route to a 4-1 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Wednesday night.

The nationally ranked No. 20 Continentals dropped to 7-5 overall and 3-5 in the conference. All five Hamilton losses are against teams currently ranked in the top 12 in Division III.

The Continentals play their third straight game against a ranked team on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they host No. 7 Trinity College at 11 a.m. for more NESCAC action. Saturday's home game is the last of 2021 for Hamilton, which will honor its 10 seniors prior to the contest.

No. 10 Williams (10-3, 5-3) held a 17-3 shot advantage, including 11-0 after halftime, and the Ephs doubled up the Continentals in penalty corners, 6-3. Carson Stephenson made two saves in the cage.

Catherine Torres gave Williams a 1-0 lead on her ninth goal with 2:43 left in the first quarter. Keeley Duran '22 prevented the Ephs from taking a two-goal lead in the final minute of the quarter when she got in the way of a van den Broek shot at the goal line and picked up her second defensive save this fall.

Tracey Stafford '23 drew Hamilton even with 5:46 remaining in the second quarter. Lexi Takashima '22 inserted the ball on a penalty corner to Kiera Wax '23 and she stopped it for Duran. Instead of shooting, Duran passed to her left to Hannah Dillon '24 inside the circle. Dillon one-timed the pass to Stafford, who had positioned herself near the right post, and she redirected the ball into the back of the cage for her fourth goal this season and ninth of her career. Dillon picked up her fourth assist.

The Continentals managed just one shot the rest of the night. Emily Batchelor put Williams in the lead for good on her ninth goal with 10:32 to go in the third quarter, and van den Broek made it 3-1 on her team-leading 13th goal with 1:23 left in the third. Molly Hellman completed the scoring on her third goal with 5:57 remaining in the fourth quarter. Maggie Reville '22 turned away five shots for Hamilton.
