Mackey '20 scores in NESCAC women's hockey semifinal loss

Box Score

Middlebury College goaltender Anna Goldstein made 29 saves and the Panthers rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Hamilton College Continentals in a 2020 NESCAC Women's Ice Hockey Championship semifinal at Middlebury's Chip Kenyon Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton (16-9-1 overall) was the fourth seed for the championship after they finished in fourth place in the conference standings. The Continentals received votes in this week's USCHO.com Division III Top 10 poll and tied the team record for wins in a season that they established last season.

The top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 2 Panthers (21-2-3) held a 37-30 shot advantage. Jenna Letterie had the assist on both Middlebury goals.

Special teams played a huge role in this contest as Hamilton scored on the power play and the Panthers countered with a shorthanded tally. Middlebury was 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Panthers enjoyed an 11-4 edge in shots in the first period, but the Continentals led 1-0 after the first 20 minutes. Missy Segall '21 sent a backhand pass to Kelli Mackey '20 near the blue line and Mackey skated to the top of the right faceoff circle. Mackey unleashed a wrist shot that beat Goldstein on her glove side for her fourth goal with 3:08 left. Segall finished the season with 13 assists and 22 points. Hyla Mosher '23 picked up her sixth assist on the play.

Anna Zumwinkle tied the score on her third goal with 6.9 seconds remaining in the second period. Sidney Portner notched the game-winner at 9:39 of the third -- her sixth goal this season -- while the Panthers were shorthanded.

Hamilton pulled goaltender Sidney Molnar '22 with 1:21 to go in the third for an extra skater but didn't get the equalizer. Segall had the only shot on goal in the final 81 seconds. Molnar finished with 35 saves and ended the season with a 1.59 goals against average and .927 save percentage in 15 starts. Maddie Hong '23 won 8 of 12 faceoffs for the Continentals.
