Women's hockey extends win streak to four with victory over Conn. College

Box Score

Four Hamilton College players scored and the Continentals cruised to a 4-1 NESCAC win over the Connecticut College Camels at Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Friday night.

The Continentals (15-8-0, 9-6 NESCAC) have won four in a row and nine of their last 11. Hamilton, which received votes in this week's USCHO.com Division III Top 10 poll, are still in fourth place in the conference standings with one game left in the regular season. The Continentals will clinch a top-four seed and a NESCAC championship quarterfinal on home ice with a win or a tie against Conn. College on Saturday, Feb. 22. Hamilton will honor its five seniors before the opening puck drops at 3 p.m.

Head Coach Emily McNamara picked up her 100th win with the Continentals. McNamara guided Hamilton to a team-record 16 victories last season.

The Camels (13-7-3, 6-6-3) are locked into sixth place in the NESCAC standings. Erin Dillon scored her 13th goal and starting goaltender Abby Wieczorek made 21 saves. Carly Denora relieved Wieczorek early in the third period and stopped all six shots she faced in 16-plus minutes.

Michaela Giuttari '20 picked up two assists and Sidney Molnar '22 turned away 19 shots for the Continentals. Giuttari is second in the conference with 15 helpers and is tied for fourth with 23 points. Molnar has a 1.27 goals against average and .941 save percentage in nine NESCAC starts.

Conn. College grabbed a 1-0 lead 8:07 into the first period. Dillon forced a turnover in Hamilton's defensive end and moved the puck behind the net to Kylie Wilkes who found Lauren Helm in the slot. Helm passed to Dillon cutting below the left faceoff circle towards the low slot and she swept the puck into the back of the net as she fell to the ice.

Missy Segall '21 tied the score with 20.7 seconds left in the first. Loh controlled the puck along the right-side boards and passed to Segall for a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle that she lifted top shelf past Wieczorek. Segall is tied for the team lead with nine goals. She nearly tied the score with 7:00 left in the period when she went in alone on a breakaway while the Continentals were short-handed, but Wieczorek got a piece of her shot and it sailed over the net.

This game featured the top two offenses in the conference and Hamilton started to hold up its end of the bargain in the second period when the Continentals held a 15-4 shot advantage. Jess Haviland '21 scored her fifth goal 3:45 into the period while Hamilton was killing a hooking penalty. Giuttari intercepted a pass near center ice, nearly ran into a teammate and lost the puck for a moment. Haviland corralled it near the blue line and unleashed a wrist shot from above the right faceoff circle that beat Wieczorek high on her glove side for the team's second short-handed goal this season.

Mya Berretta '22 made up for four minutes of penalties early in the second by scoring her fifth goal at 9:23 of the period. A shot by Kelli Mackey '20 from above the left faceoff circle bounced off a player in front and kicked over to Berretta who was alone just outside the crease. Wieczorek went down as she reacted to the first shot and Berretta backhanded the puck into the open net.

Allie Curry '23 rounded out the scoring with her fourth goal at 3:11 of the third period. Katherine Solohub '23 hammered a slap shot from above the left faceoff circle that sailed wide left and Madie Bologa '21 controlled the puck behind the net. Bologa skated around the other side and sent a centering pass to Curry who had set up shop just outside the crease. Curry one-timed Bologa's pass into the back of the net from point-blank range and chased Wieczorek.

The Continentals killed all of the Camels' five power plays including three early in the second period. Hamilton is 11-0 when leading after two periods.
