Box Score Ithaca College took the lead with 12 straight points in the second quarter and the Bombers held on for a 71-67 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Ithaca's Ben Light Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Hamilton (12-7 overall) owned a 43-32 advantage on the glass, including 20 offensive rebounds, and finished with 21 second-chance points to the Bombers' 11. The Continentals scored 18 points off 16 Ithaca turnovers and made 19 free throws while the Bombers attempted just 10.
Ithaca (11-5) shot 50 percent from the floor, scored 38 points in the paint and blocked 12 shots. This was the first meeting between the teams since they played in a season-opening tournament at Skidmore College in 2012.
Kelcie Zarle '22 tied a career high with 23 points for Hamilton. It was the third time this season Zarle has scored 23 in a game and she has finished with 12 or more in each of the last six contests. Zarle is 10th in the NESCAC with 14.1 points per game and is fourth in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.4 percent. She was 3 of 7 from beyond the arc against the Bombers.
Kayla Glemaud '21 chipped in a career-best 19 points for the Continentals before she fouled out in the final seconds. Carly O'Hern '20 dropped in 11 points and Liz Arnold '22 was a basket short of a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds including seven on the offensive glass. Scout Lansing '21 handed out three assists and made three steals.
KellyAnne O'Reilly led Ithaca with 20 points and Cassidy O'Malley ended up with 15 points and three blocked shots. Grace Cannon registered 14 points, three steals and three blocks. Abbi Field scored 11 points off the bench and fellow reserve Juliana Gamboa contributed five assists and four steals.
Hamilton went on an early 10-2 run and jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first quarter. Lansing and Glemaud started the spurt with layups and Zarle and Glemaud ended it with 3-pointers that made it 14-6 with 3:54 left. The Bombers responded with the last seven points of the quarter and pulled within 14-13 after the opening 10 minutes.
The Continentals took their last lead at 16-15 on an O'Hern layup early in the second quarter, and a basket in the paint by Arnold tied the score at 20-20 with 7:22 remaining. Ithaca proceeded to score the next 12 points and finished with 26 in the quarter. The Bombers went into the break with that 12-point cushion at 39-27. O'Malley and Cannon combined to score 22 points in the first half for Ithaca.
Hamilton didn't get closer than four points in the second half, and the Continentals didn't pull within that margin until the final minute of the fourth quarter. Zarle made it 67-63 on two free throws with 55 seconds to go and came up with a steal and another free throw that made it 68-64 with 31 seconds left. The Bombers were able to hold off Hamilton by going 4-for-6 at the line in the final minute. Zarle beat the horn and provided the final four-point margin with a 3-pointer. Zarle scored 17 points in the second half and O'Reilly led Ithaca with 14.
The Continentals are back on the road for a NESCAC game at Wesleyan University on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.
