Women's basketball passes Bates in final minute for NESCAC win

Box Score

Hamilton College's Scout Lansing '21 put the Continentals in the lead on a one-handed jumper in the lane with 42.5 seconds left and they went on to a 63-59 NESCAC win against the Bates College Bobcats at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon.

The Continentals (11-6, 1-3 NESCAC) ended their losing skid at four games and picked up their first conference victory. Hamilton outscored Bates 37-24 in the second half. The Continentals owned a 17-3 advantage in bench points.

The Bobcats (9-7, 1-2) led for more than 38 of the 40 minutes. Bates owned a 39-30 advantage on the glass. The Bobcats have lost two NESCAC road games by a total of 10 points.

Hamilton was 7 of 13 from 3-point range as a team and a lot of that had to do with Kelcie Zarle '22, who was 5 of 6 from long range and finished with 18 points and two steals. Zarle is second in the conference with 42 3-pointers, fourth with a 3-point field goal percentage of 42.9 percent, third with 40 steals and 11th with 13.6 points per game. Kayla Glemaud '21 chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds and Marie Steiner '20 added nine points and four assists in 16 minutes off the bench.

Bates' Meghan Graff led everyone with 20 points and Mia Roy contributed 17. Ariana Dalia was a basket short of a double-double with eight points and 11 boards. Taylor McVeigh was credited with three steals and two blocked shots and Melanie Binkhorst also came up with three steals.

Lansing's go-ahead bucket represented her only points of the day and at 60-59 was the Continentals' first lead since it was 3-2 early in the first quarter. After a 30-second timeout called by the Bobcats, Carly O'Hern '20 forced a turnover was fouled. On the ensuing inbounds play, Bates was forced to foul Zarle with 23.2 seconds remaining but Zarle was shaken up and Mackenzie Aldridge '20 was inserted to shoot the free throws. Aldridge made the first but missed the second and McVeigh grabbed the rebound before the Bobcats called another 30-second timeout.

Trailing 61-59, Bates ran the clock down and Roy missed from just inside the 3-point line on the right wing. Glemaud grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.9 seconds to go. She stepped to the line and iced the victory by calmly swishing both free throws.

The Bobcats led by double digits at 18-8 late in the first quarter and held a 20-11 advantage after one. Roy and Graff scored seven points apiece as Bates shot 50 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes. The Bobcats led by as many as 11 points on a few occasions in the second quarter before they went into the break with a nine-point cushion at 35-26.

Bates took its largest lead of 13 points at 39-26 early in the third quarter and still led 43-31 with 5:00 left. Hamilton scored the next seven points and then ended the quarter with a 6-0 run that pulled them within one at 50-49. Zarle and Glemaud combined for 17 points as the Continentals shot 53 percent from the floor during the third.

The Bobcats scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and were able to hold off Hamilton until the final minute. Graff scored all nine of Bates' points and the Bobcats were 4 of 15 shooting in the final 10 minutes.
