Box Score Hamilton College's Jon Beniers '21 scored two goals and Anthony Tirabassi '20 made 29 saves in the Continentals' 4-1 NESCAC win against Tufts University at Tufts' Valley Forum on Friday night.
Hamilton (5-6-2, 4-4-0 NESCAC) had an exceptional night on special teams as the Continentals scored two power-play goals and killed all five of the Jumbos' chances. Jordi Jefferson '22 notched his team-leading fifth goal.
Tufts (4-9-0, 2-5) held a 30-23 shot advantage including 14-7 in the third period. Josh Sarlo stopped 19 shots in 56-plus minutes.
Beniers opened the scoring at 3:08 in the first period. A shot by Sam Jones '20 from the left point was saved by Sarlo, but the rebound went straight to Beniers on the left side and he made a move to the middle and scored on a back-hander.
Nick Hawkins '23 recorded his second goal at Hamilton 22 seconds into a power play at 10:59 of the first. Nick Rutigliano '22 retrieved a rebound in the left corner of the Tufts zone and sent a cross-ice pass to Joey Moore '22, who fanned on a shot. The puck kept sliding towards the front of the net and Hawkins knocked it in.
Brendan Skarda cut the Jumbos' deficit in half with 4:23 left in the second period. Skarda won a puck in the left corner of the Hamilton zone and it squirted to Alex Lycett. Lycett sent it towards the goal and it deflected back to Skarda.
The score remained 2-1 until Beniers tallied his third goal this season with 6:09 remaining in the third period. He was sent in by a pass from Justin Felhaber '21 and slid the puck past Sarlo.
Jefferson provided the Continentals some insurance on a power-play goal with 4:44 to go in the third. He was set up perfectly in the slot by Nick Ursitti '20 for a one-timer.
Tufts' last chance to gain some ground came with 3:47 left when a Hamilton player was sent to the penalty box for slashing. The Jumbos put four shots on net during their power play, but Tirabassi turned them all away.
The Continentals play another NESCAC game at Connecticut College on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
