Box Score Hamilton College's Scout Lansing '21 fed a pass to Kelcie Zarle '22 and Zarle swished a jump shot with 13 seconds left that elevated the Continentals to a 67-65 non-conference win against the William Smith College Herons at William Smith's Bristol Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Hamilton improved to 8-1 overall and concluded the fall semester portion of its schedule on a four-game win streak. The Continentals head to Tennessee for the Nashville Music City Classic on Dec. 29 and 30.
The victory snapped a five-game win streak that William Smith (5-3 overall) held over Hamilton. The two teams have met on the hardwood 54 times since the Continentals' inaugural varsity campaign in 1979-80, making it the longest running annual rivalry in Hamilton women's basketball history.
Marie Steiner '20 guided Hamilton with 15 points and shot 4 of 5 from 3-point range. Carly O'Hern '20 totaled 13 points with a trio of 3-pointers. Lansing dished out a career-high eight assists, Zarle scored nine points and added three assists, Kayla Glemaud '21 had four steals and six rebounds, and Liz Arnold '22 totaled eight points.
Four Herons scored in double figures as Stella Davis led the way with 16 points. Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou and Olivia Parisi scored 15 points apiece and Parisi racked up 15 rebounds. Annaliese Schreder totaled 13 points and three steals and Lauren DeVaney grabbed 10 boards.
Hamilton jumped out to a 7-0 lead on two points from Arnold and five from O'Hern in the first three minutes for its largest lead of the first quarter. William Smith tied the score at 15-15 with 59 seconds left in the opening quarter, but Steiner hit a three and then a layup before Dimitrakopoulou hit a final-second jumper that pulled the Herons within 20-18 after one.
William Smith took its first and only lead at 26-25 on a Dimitrakopoulou jump shot in the paint with 6:15 left in the second quarter. Zarle quickly gave the lead back to Hamilton with a layup and O'Hern made it a four-point advantage with a shot from beyond the arc at 5:20. The Continentals gained their first double-digit lead on a made free throw by Steiner that made it 38-28 with 2:33 left in the second. William Smith crawled back to within six points at 41-35 by halftime.
The Herons did not get closer than three points in the third stanza as Hamilton entered the final quarter with a 55-47 cushion. The fourth was the only quarter that William Smith outscored Hamilton as the Herons posted an 18-12 advantage. A layup by Lansing gave Hamilton its largest lead of 11 points at 64-53 with 4:53 left before William Smith responded with 10 unanswered points that cut its deficit to one at 64-63. Parisi tied the score at 65-65 on a layup with 25 seconds remaining and head coach Mahogany Green called a full timeout with 21 seconds to go. Green drew up the game-winning play and Zarle delivered with the basket. William Smith missed a pair of 3-point attempts in the closing seconds.
