Women's basketball rallies for 60-53 win over SUNY Brockport

Box Score

Hamilton College's Halie Serbent '19 scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half and the Continentals came from behind for a 60-53 non-conference win against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles in women's basketball action at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Tuesday night.

The Continentals (12-4 overall) improved their record to 6-0 at home. Hamilton trailed by as many as 12 points midway through the second quarter but took the lead for good by outscoring Brockport 19-9 in the third.

Serbent has scored at least 16 points in each of the last three games. She tied a career high with five assists and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. The Continentals enjoyed a huge advantage at the charity stripe where they were 22-for-29 (75.9 percent) and the Golden Eagles were just 7-for-11 (63.6 percent).

Marie Steiner '20 dropped in 13 points in the second start of her Hamilton career. Kendall Rallins '19 chipped in 12 points and four steals, and Lauren Getman '18 added eight points and eight rebounds. Samantha Srinivasan '18 tied a career best with 12 boards and helped the Continentals to a 38-30 advantage on the glass.

Lindsay Johnson paced Brockport (5-10) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Emily Nestler scored 11 points and Bailey Pratt handed out four assists.

The Golden Eagles led 29-18 with 3:44 left in the second quarter, but a 17-3 run during the next nine-plus minutes put Hamilton ahead to stay. Serbent started the spurt with a layup and the Continentals closed to within 29-22 at the break as a jumper by Kayla Glemaud '21 beat the halftime buzzer.

Hamilton's rally continued into the third quarter when the Continentals scored the first seven points and tied the score at 29-29. Rallins and Serbent scored in the paint and Rallins' 3-pointer forged the first deadlock since it was 8-8.

Johnson stopped the run by making the second of two free throws, but a layup by Steiner gave Hamilton the lead at 31-30. It was the first advantage for the Continentals since they led 6-4 early in the first quarter. Zaria McCullough put Brockport back in the lead with a layup but two free throws by Rallins and a Steiner basket made it 35-32 with 4:21 remaining in the third. Hamilton led by as much as five at 39-34 after a pair of Getman free throws and at 41-36 on a Serbent basket from close range late in the third. The Continentals owned a 41-38 edge going into the final quarter.

Hamilton led throughout the fourth quarter but never by more than nine points. The Golden Knights cut their deficit to one point at 46-45 on a 3-pointer by Johnson with 5:19 to go. Rallins and Srinivasan drained two free throws apiece before Johnson made it 50-47 with a layup. Johnson made the first of two free throws and pulled Brockport within two points before Getman canned a pair of shots at the stripe.

The Continentals got an easy basket as Srinivasan pulled down a defensive rebound, made the outlet to Rallins, and she passed ahead to a streaking Steiner for a fast-break layup and a 54-48 cushion with 1:29 left. After the Golden Eagles made it a one-possession game again, Serbent drove to the basket from the left side for a layup and a 56-51 advantage with 41 seconds remaining. Serbent clinched the victory with four free throws in the final 27 seconds.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first quarter as there were four ties and two lead changes. Hamilton pulled within two at 15-13 with 23 seconds left when Serbent grabbed an offensive rebound and made the putback. A jumper by McCullough with nine seconds remaining in the quarter kicked off a 12-2 run for Brockport. Nestler finished the quarter with eight points.

Johnson opened the second quarter with two baskets and, after two free throws by Getman, Julianna Taylor and Bailey Pratt made back-to-back jumpers. Taylor capped the spurt with a steal and layup that gave the Golden Eagles a 27-15 cushion with 5:19 to go.

Hamilton hosts Amherst College for a NESCAC game on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. The Mammoths are undefeated and ranked No. 1 in both Division III polls.
