Box Score The Hamilton College women's hockey team scored four goals in the second period to defeat Trinity College 4-0 in NESCAC action on Friday night at Russell Sage Rink.
The Continentals (7-3-1, 5-0 NESCAC) outshot the Bantams 20-4 and capitalized on 3-of-5 power-play opportunities in the second period alone.
Sam Walther '18 made 16 saves and posted the shutout for Hamilton. Just 47 seconds into the second period, Trinity's Kelcie Finn was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped on a breakaway. Finn attempted to deke around Walther, but the all-American goaltender made the stick save en route to her third shutout of the season and 19th of her Hamilton career.
Kate Piacenza '21 opened the floodgates 6:05 into the second period with her third goal of the season. Timary Malley '20 passed to Caroline Knop '18 at the point for a one-timer slap shot. Kai-Lilly Karpman (24 saves) made the initial save for Trinity, but Piacenza was waiting outside the crease and backhanded the puck under the crossbar for the power-play goal.
Just 1:32 later, Madie Bologa '21 notched her first collegiate goal with a little help from Michaela Giuttari '20 and Maddie Beitler '21. Giuttari won the battle in the corner and passed the puck to Bologa on top of the faceoff circle. Bologa fired a low shot as Beitler set up a perfect screen in front of the net and gave Karpman no chance to stop the puck as it went between her legs and into the back of the net.
Hamilton notched its second power-play goal at the 14:54 mark. Stephanie DiPietro '18 gathered the loose puck in the corner and found Taegan Blackwell '19 at the point for a pass to Missy Segall '21 skating around the faceoff circle. DiPietro set up a screen in front of the net and Segall ripped a wrist shot from the high slot and inside the left post for the sixth goal of her young Hamilton career.
Beitler scored the final goal with 1:23 remaining in the period. Knop fired a shot that was blocked by the Trinity defenders and the puck deflected to Malley's stick at the left faceoff dot. Malley wristed the puck towards the goal and Beitler redirected it off her pads and into the upper-left corner of the net for Hamilton's third power-play goal.
Hamilton and Trinity (2-9-0, 0-7) complete the two-game series on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. in Russell Sage Rink.
