Box Score Trinity College took the lead for good with a 10-0 run late in the fourth quarter and posted a 63-58 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Trinity's Oosting Gymnasium on Friday night.
Hamilton (10-11, 3-6 NESCAC) is in a five-way tie for sixth place in the conference standings with one NESCAC game remaining. The top eight teams advance to the 2017 NESCAC Women's Basketball Championship quarterfinals, which are played next Saturday. The Continentals travel to nationally ranked No. 1 and undefeated Amherst College for their regular season finale on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m.
The Bantams (12-9, 3-6) are also in that logjam for sixth place. Trinity won for the first time since Jan. 14 and ended its losing skid at six games.
Carly O'Hern '20 paced Hamilton with a season-high 19 points and added eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Lauren Getman '18 chipped in 11 points and 11 boards for her fourth double-double this season and the ninth of her career with the Continentals. Halie Serbent '19 scored eight points, Caroline Barrett '17 handed out seven assists and Samantha Srinivasan '18 was credited with a career-best four steals. Hamilton was 8 of 20 from 3-point range.
Courtney Erickson led the Bantams with a game-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Aubree Udell, Rebecca Reifler and Erica Junquet added 10 points each. Junquet made all six of her attempts at the free-throw line and Trinity went 18-for-23 (78.3 percent) as a team from the charity stripe.
Neither team led by more than three points in the fourth quarter until the final minute as there were two ties and five lead changes. A layup by Serbent gave the Continentals their last lead at 55-53 with 2:34 left.
Udell put the Bantams in front for good with a 3-pointer 17 seconds later. Erin Cunningham made a pair of free throws, Junquet added two more with 33 seconds remaining and Cunningham went 1-for-2 at the line with 21 seconds to go. Erickson clinched the win with two free throws for a 63-55 cushion with 5 seconds left. A Serbent 3-pointer beat the buzzer for the final margin. Hamilton was 1 of 5 from the field with a turnover in the final two minutes. Trinity went 9-for-10 at the line during the fourth quarter.
The Bantams opened the first quarter with four straight points but the Continentals roared back with eight in a row. Hamilton held a 14-8 lead after one as O'Hern made all three of her shot attempts.
O'Hern scored the first seven points of the second quarter and the Continentals led 21-11. An O'Hern trifecta gave Hamilton its largest lead of the night of 13 points at 28-15 with 6:11 remaining. The Continentals still held a nine-point lead at 30-21 after a Getman jumper but Trinity climbed back into the game with a 10-2 run. Hamilton was clinging to a 32-31 edge late in the quarter when Srinivasan made a layup with 5 seconds left and the Continentals went into the break with a 34-31 lead. O'Hern finished the quarter with 10 points and had 17 by the break.
Hamilton led the entire third quarter and it was 44-37 after an O'Hern layup with 6:17 remaining. The Continentals made one basket the rest of the quarter (a Serbent 3-pointer) and the Bantams drew to within two points at 47-45 after three.
