Box Score Hamilton College's Kena Gilmour '20 dropped in 20 points and the Continentals posted a 75-69 win against SUNY Oswego in the 2017 Elmira College Men's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament at Elmira's Speidel Gymnasium on Saturday.
The game was the season opener for both teams. Hamilton advances to the tournament championship game and will play Keystone College on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. Keystone (1-1 overall) edged the hosts 108-105 in overtime earlier Saturday afternoon.
Gilmour also grabbed eight rebounds as the Continentals held a 46-43 edge on the glass. Michael Grassey '19 chipped in 12 points and eight boards, and Tyler Washington '21 and Andrew Groll '19 scored 11 points apiece off the bench. Washington was playing in his first game at Hamilton and Groll blocked two shots. Tim Doyle '19 added nine points in the game's final 5:22 and Peter Hoffmann '19 contributed seven points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Oswego's Jamie Ferebee led all scorers with 22 points and Liam Sanborn poured in 17. Josh Ivey recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, and Tyler Pierre registered eight points and a game-high 15 rebounds. The Lakers were just 6 of 23 (26.1 percent) from 3-point range.
Neither team led by more than eight points as the game featured seven ties and six lead changes. Oswego led 65-61 after a Ferebee 3-pointer with 5:31 left but a 12-2 Hamilton run put the Continentals ahead for good.
Doyle started the spurt with a layup and, after a Hamilton 30-second timeout, Washington grabbed a defensive rebound and tied the score at 65-65 with a layup. Pierre put the Lakers back up by two on a pair of free throws with 4:17 remaining. After missed shots by both teams, Hoffmann drained a shot from long range and put the Continentals ahead 68-67 with 3:04 to go. Gilmour stole the ball on the next possession and fed Doyle for a layup and a 70-67 advantage.
Oswego committed a turnover and missed a 3-pointer before Hoffmann found Doyle open for another trifecta that gave Hamilton a 73-67 cushion with 1:14 left. Ferebee's layup with 12 seconds remaining pulled the Lakers within four but two free throws by Doyle clinched the victory with nine seconds to go.
The Continentals led 40-34 at the break but Oswego opened the second half with a 13-4 run. A 3-pointer by Ivey put the Lakers ahead 47-44 with just under 14 minutes left and they held onto the lead for the next nine minutes.
Oswego jumped out to a 17-9 advantage in the first seven minutes before Hamilton roared back with a 13-2 run keyed by Washington's five points and four more by Groll. A Washington jumper gave the Continentals a 24-22 edge with 8:07 remaining and they held that lead the rest of the half. A basket by Grassey with 63 seconds to go gave Hamilton its largest lead of the half at six points, 40-34.
