Women's hockey completes historic sweep of No. 6/7 Middlebury

Box Score

The Hamilton College women's hockey team scored with 1:48 left in the third period to beat host Middlebury College 2-1 Saturday afternoon in the finale of a weekend NESCAC series in Middlebury, Vt.

With the win the Continentals -- who blanked the hosts 2-0 Friday night -- became the first team to sweep a weekend series at Middlebury since NESCAC women's hockey began in 2001-02.

Hamilton was outshot 36-9 but scored a pair of power-play goals to post the win.

The Continentals broke the 1-1 tie 41 seconds into the third of their three power-play chances when Andrea Rockey '19 tipped in a shot off the stick of Kelli Mackey '19 for her ninth goal of the season. Mackey had a hand in three of Hamilton's four goals in the weekend sweep.

The Panthers pulled goaltender Lin Han in favor of an extra skater with 1:40 remaining, but their best chances resulted in a Carly Watson shot from the left point that hit the far post and a quick shot by Jessica Young from point-blank range that was turned aside by Sam Walther '18 with 16 seconds left.

Walther finished with 35 saves after blanking the Panthers with a 21-save effort Friday night.

The Continentals got on the board late in the opening period, scoring a power-play tally with just 33 seconds remaining. Michaela Giuttari '20 made a nice pass from the right side across the zone to Jenna Jewell '19 for a one-timer into the back of the net. The goal was her second of the season.

Middlebury spent nearly eight minutes on the power play in the second period, outshooting the visitors 18-2. The second power play saw the Panthers nearly tie the game as Young's one-timer off a pass from Maddie Winslow was denied by a big pad save from Walther. Middlebury broke through on its third chance with the second of the year from Lizzie Sheline to make it a 1-1 game at the 13:44 mark. Carly Watson's shot from the point was tipped by Sheline before bouncing off a Hamilton skate on its way to the back of the net.

The Continentals host Bowdoin College for a pair of NESCAC games on Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4.
