Serbent '19 drops in 14 in women's basketball setback

Box Score

Four William Smith College players scored in double figures and the Herons pulled away in the final minute for a 67-60 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Monday.

The Continentals (5-4 overall) had their win streak snapped at five games as the team's last loss was back on Nov. 22. Hamilton and William Smith were playing each other for the first time since 2011 when they were Liberty League rivals, and this was the 51st game in the all-time series. Only Union (56 meetings) has faced the Continentals more often than the Herons.

Halie Serbent '19 had her second straight solid game for Hamilton with a game-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds before she fouled out in the final seconds. Serbent was 5 of 9 from the floor and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line. She has made 19 consecutive free throws.

Samantha Srinivasan '18 dropped in 12 points and Mackenzie Aldridge '20 scored nine for the Continentals. Lauren Getman '18 grabbed eight rebounds and Caroline Barrett '17 handed out four assists.

Olivia Hughes scored six of her 12 points in the fourth quarter for William Smith (6-3). Melanie Patterson chipped in 12 points and four assists, and Krista Anken added 10 points. Mia Morrison posted 12 points and a game-high nine boards in 19 minutes off the bench. The Herons held a 16-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

A Getman jumper with just under a minute left in the fourth quarter pulled Hamilton within one point at 61-60. On William Smith's next possession, Hughes grabbed an offensive rebound and made the layup for a 63-60 lead with 35 seconds remaining. A steal and layup by Natalia Baum gave the Herons a 65-60 cushion with 19 seconds to go, and Hughes clinched the win by making a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left.

William Smith didn't lead by more than five points the entire fourth quarter until Hughes' free throws. A free throw by the Continentals' Carly O'Hern '20 tied the score for the fourth and final time at 55-55 with 4:51 remaining. O'Hern missed her second attempt which would have given Hamilton its first lead since 9-8 midway through the first quarter. A 3-point play by Patterson moved the Herons into the lead for good at 58-55. The Continentals also missed a pair of shots while trailing 58-57 that would have put them in the lead with about three minutes to go.

Hamilton jumped out to an early 7-2 advantage but William Smith roared back with a 9-2 run and took its first lead at 11-9 on a 3-pointer by Alyssa Dicampli. The Herons led 17-15 after the first 10 minutes.

William Smith led by as many as nine points in the second quarter before going into the break with a 34-27 advantage. Patterson scored seven points during the quarter.

The Herons seized their largest lead of the night of 11 points on three occasions early in the third quarter, including 44-33 after a Hughes jumper. The Continentals responded with an 11-2 spurt that cut their deficit to two points at 46-44 at the end of three quarters. Srinivasan scored five points during the run.

Hamilton travels to Connecticut College for the first NESCAC game of the season on Friday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m.
