Box Score Tufts University never trailed and the Jumbos remained undefeated with a 70-42 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon.
Tufts (15-0, 4-0 NESCAC) is ranked No. 1 in the latest D3hoops.com and Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 polls. The Jumbos are second in the conference and third in Division III with 43.5 points per game allowed.
Lauren Getman '18 paced the Continentals (7-7, 1-3) with 12 points and two blocked shots. Getman leads the team with 11.1 points per game. Carly O'Hern '20 chipped in 10 points and a season-high seven rebounds off the bench. O'Hern has scored in double digits in six of the last eight games. Marie Steiner '20 added eight points off the bench, Samantha Srinivasan '18 grabbed seven boards and Kendall Rallins '19 handed out three assists.
Melissa Baptista scored 11 of Tufts' first 14 points and finished with a game-high 18. Baptista also pulled down five rebounds and blocked two shots. Sadie Otley contributed 16 points and three steals off the bench. Otley was 6 of 8 from the floor including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. Jacqueline Knapp recorded 12 points and a game-high six assists, Lauren Dillon dished out four assists and Erica DeCandido was credited with three steals. Leading scorer Michela North was held to just two points on 1 of 7 shooting by Hamilton's defense.
The Jumbos had 21 assists on 26 made field goals, committed just eight turnovers, held a 41-32 advantage on the glass and was 10 of 24 (41.7 percent) from 3-point range.
The score was tied just once at 2-2 after Getman made a layup. Baptista followed with an old-fashioned 3-point play and a trifecta, and Tufts led the rest of the way. An Otley layup gave the Jumbos their first double-digit lead at 18-7 with 1:43 left and Knapp beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer that put Tufts up 24-12 after one quarter. Tufts was 5 of 8 from long range during the first 10 minutes. Getman scored half of her 12 points in the first quarter.
Tufts led by as many as 18 in the second quarter at 34-16 after an Otley 3-pointer with 3:31 remaining. The Jumbos eventually went into the break with a 35-22 cushion.
The Continentals were still within 11 at 43-32 after a Steiner jumper with 3:34 to go in the third but Tufts closed out the quarter and took control with an 11-2 run. Knapp started the spurt with a pair of free throws and Otley followed with five straight points. After a layup by Steiner, baskets by DeCandido and Jennie Mucciarone made it 54-34 after three. The Jumbos were 7 of 13 shooting and made all four of their free throw attempts in the quarter.
Tufts led by at least 20 points the entire fourth quarter as Hamilton attempted just six shots during the final 10 minutes.
The Continentals host Morrisville State College for a non-conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m.
