Box Score Bates College ended the game with a 13-0 run and the Bobcats pulled away for a 60-44 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday night.
Bates' Allie Coppola posted a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Bernadette Connors chipped in 12 points, eight boards and four assists, and Lyse Henshaw dropped in 10 points. Nina Davenport added eight points and three steals. The Bobcats (5-9, 2-1 NESCAC) committed just eight turnovers -- none in the first half. Bates scored 22 points off 16 Hamilton turnovers.
Halie Serbent '19 paced the Continentals with 10 points. Caroline Barrett '17 was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line and finished with eight points, Samantha Srinivasan '18 grabbed nine rebounds and Rylie Mainville '18 blocked four shots. Hamilton (7-6, 1-2) owned a 41-35 advantage on the glass. The Continentals shot 28.8 percent from the floor including 1 of 13 from 3-point range.
The Bobcats were just 3 of 13 from the field in the fourth quarter but they made all 10 of their free throw attempts. Bates led 43-38 after three quarters and a pair of free throws by Connors 15 seconds into the fourth made it a seven-point game. Lauren Getman '18 and Carly O'Hern '20 pulled Hamilton within three points on a jumper and a layup, respectively. After a basket in the paint by Coppola, the Continentals' Mackenzie Aldridge '20 scored from close range and cut Hamilton's deficit to three again at 47-44 with 5:35 left. Hamilton, which had a chance to get within one point with 4:20 remaining, didn't score again.
Connors started the game-ending run with two more free throws and Davenport made a layup for a 51-44 cushion with 3:44 to go. Henshaw delivered the big blow with a 3-pointer from the corner for a 10-point advantage with 2:28 left. Coppola made four free throws and Henshaw drained two more down the stretch. The Continentals were 0 for 7 with two turnovers in the final five minutes.
The Bobcats scored the first basket and never trailed. There was one tie score at 2-2 early in the first quarter. Davenport and Henshaw nailed 3-pointers for an 8-2 lead and Bates stayed in front the rest of the night. Hamilton didn't get closer than three points after that.
After a Srinivasan layup made it 13-9 midway through the quarter, the Bobcats went on a 10-2 run and put some distance between themselves and the Continentals. Coppola had the first six points and Henshaw capped the spurt with a layup for a 23-11 lead. Bates was 9 of 15 from the field, including 4 of 6 from long range, as the Bobcats led 23-13 after one quarter.
Bates' lead fluctuated between eight and 12 points during the second quarter and the Bobcats went into the break with a 36-24 advantage. Coppola had 14 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Bates led 39-26 early in the third quarter when Hamilton made its move with a 12-4 run to the end of the quarter. Serbent, Aldridge and Kate Bushell '17 made layups and Barrett had two free throws to close the gap to 39-34 with 4:14 remaining. A layup by Coppola with 3:38 to go was the first basket for the Bobcats in more than five minutes. Barrett responded with two more free throws, Lexie Nason put Bates back up by seven with a jumper and Serbent countered with another layup in the final seconds for a 43-38 margin after three quarters.
The Continentals host nationally ranked No. 1 Tufts on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 3 p.m.
