Women's hockey to bring four-game winning streak into 2017

Box Score

The Hamilton College women's hockey team extended its winning streak to four, topping host SUNY Cortland 3-1 Saturday afternoon. The game was the last 2016 contest for the Continentals (5-2-0 overall).

Hamilton killed all three Red Dragon power plays and seven Continentals reached the scoring column.

For the season, the Continentals are one of only two teams who haven't given up a power-play goal (opponents are 0-for-26 this winter). They rank fifth in scoring defense and 12th in scoring margin.

Three Hamilton sophomores each scored their second goal of the season. Kelli Mackey '19 opened the scoring just 89 seconds into the game with Megan Ahern '17 and Michaela Giuttari '20 assisting. Ahern's assist was her team-best sixth this year.

After the hosts tied the score with just over five minutes to go in the opening period the Continentals took the lead for good midway through the second. Olivia Hawes '19 netted the game winner off an assist from Sara Taffe '17 (her first of the season).

Andrea Rockey '19 closed out the scoring with 3:56 left in the third period. Alayna Trice '20 was credited with the assist for her first collegiate point.

Sam Walther '18 stopped 19 shots for the win. She ranks fifth nationally in save percentage (.963) and sixth in goals against average (0.89).

Stephanie Heresniak scored Cortland's goal off an assist from Ally Edwards. Victoria Gibson made 35 saves.

Hamilton is idle for four weeks until the Doubletree Ice Hockey Classic in South Burlington, Vt., Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6 and 7. The Continentals will take on Sacred Heart in their first game, then face Plymouth State.
