Box Score SUNY Polytechnic made 9 of 14 shots from beyond the arc and the Wildcats pulled away in the second half for a 74-55 non-conference women's basketball win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Tuesday afternoon.
The Continentals (0-3 overall) were 6 of 11 from the field in the second quarter and were within five points at the half at 37-32. SUNY Poly outscored Hamilton 17-8 in the third quarter and led by double digits for the entire fourth.
Lauren Getman '18 paced the Continentals with a team-high 14 points and Mackenzie Aldridge '20 scored a dozen points for the second time in three games. Caroline Barrett '17 scored all 10 of her points in the first two quarters and handed out a team-best five assists. Samantha Srinivasan '18 led the team with seven rebounds.
Khristaijah Jackson led all players with 17 points for the Wildcats (2-0). Stevie Ray chipped in 14 points, seven boards, four assists and four steals. Taylor Aybar dropped in 11 points and dished out five assists, and Kiersten Leos was a perfect 3 of 3 from 3-point range and scored all 11 of her points off the bench in the first half.
Hamilton was still within seven points at 44-37 midway through the third quarter but SUNY Poly clinched the victory with a 15-3 run that spanned the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarters. Aybar scored seven points and Jackson added three in the last five minutes of the third quarter as the Wildcats took a 54-40 advantage into the final 10 minutes. Jackson opened the fourth quarter with a layup and a 3-pointer by SUNY Poly's Paige Gallo made it 59-40 with 8:26 left.
Two free throws by Ray with 2:30 remaining gave the Wildcats their largest lead of 26 points at 74-48. The Continentals scored the final seven points to account for the final margin.
SUNY Poly shot just 30.8 percent from the floor in the first quarter but the Wildcats got better every quarter until they were 6 of 10, including a perfect 3-for-3 on shots from long range, in the fourth. SUNY Poly made more free throws (17) than Hamilton attempted (11).
After a 3-pointer by Barrett tied the score at 9-9 midway through the first quarter, the Wildcats scored the next six points on four free throws by Gallo and two by Aybar. The Continentals' Rylie Mainville '18 made a layup before Leos drained a 3-pointer for an 18-11 SUNY Poly advantage. Hamilton cut the Wildcat lead to one by scoring the next six points before two free throws by Leos made it 20-17 after the opening 10 minutes.
Neither team led by more than five points in the second quarter. The Continentals trailed 27-23 after a Jackson layup with 5:55 to go but a 6-0 spurt gave Hamilton its last lead of the afternoon. Aldridge made back-to-back baskets and Srinivasan nailed a pair of free throws for a 29-27 edge with 4:37 left. A trifecta by Leos put SUNY Poly ahead to stay at 30-29 with 4:01 remaining.
The Continentals travel to Utica College for another non-conference game on Monday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m.
