Joe Palmer is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Hamilton College men's hockey program. Palmer coached the 2017 Division III and NESCAC player of the year in goaltender Evan Buitenhuis '18. Buitenhuis was a two-time all-American in the East Region and in 2017-18 he set team single-season records for goals against average and save percentage under Palmer's guidance. Buitenhuis ended up in fourth place on the Continentals' all-time list with more than 1,900 career saves.

Palmer was selected 96th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2006 NHL entry draft before he chose to play at Ohio State University. He was a goalie for three seasons with the Buckeyes and made the Big 10 all-academic team three times.

From 2009 through 2012 Palmer played professional hockey for the Rockford Ice Hogs of the AHL, for four teams in the ECHL, and two organizations in the CHL. He posted a 2.75 goals against average, a .914 save percentage and a 13-10-4 record with the CHL's Texas Brahmas in 2009-10.

In 2008 Palmer was selected for the U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the World Under-20 Championship in the Czech Republic. He helped backstop the U.S. National Under-18 Team to a gold medal at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship in Sweden. He was also part of the U.S. National Under-18 Team that captured a gold medal at the 2005 IIHF World Championship in the Czech Republic.

Palmer, who is from Yorkville, N.Y., is the head goaltending instructor for the Syracuse Stars Junior B team as well as several other AAA and AA teams with the Syracuse Midstate organization. He operates Palmer Goalie Systems out of Syracuse.
