CLINTON, N.Y. – Amherst College's Marek Hill threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns and the Mammoths pulled away from the Hamilton College Continentals in the fourth quarter for a 38-21 win at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 26.
Season Update
- Hamilton (0-2 overall) suffered a 42-28 setback at Tufts in its season opener.
- Amherst (2-0) posted a 24-14 win over Bates on Sept. 19.
How It Happened
- Amherst's Jackson Duncan recorded an interception on the first play of the game, and Hill found Kai Erwin for a touchdown during the Mammoths' opening possession.
- Hamilton answered with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Luke Kurzum '27 connecting with Matthew Kearns '28 on a four-yard touchdown pass. Carmelo Velardo '27 added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:05 remaining in the first quarter.
- The Mammoths regained the lead with 2:35 left in the second quarter when Hill found Max Alexander for a nine-yard touchdown pass. Hamilton responded with another lengthy drive, going 75 yards in 13 plays before Kurzum found Kearns for a three-yard touchdown with six seconds remaining in the half.
- Amherst took the lead for good on its first possession of the second half. Hill connected with Cam Fowler for a 49-yard touchdown with 11:41 remaining in the third quarter, giving the Mammoths a 21-14 advantage.
- Amherst extended its lead later in the quarter when Hill found Jack Berger for a 20-yard touchdown with 5:27 remaining.
- Hamilton answered with a four-play, 86-yard scoring drive that took just 1:22 off the clock. Kurzum connected with Mitchell Ivatts '29 for a 22-yard touchdown with 14 seconds left in the quarter, cutting the deficit to 28-21.
- Amherst opened the fourth quarter with an 11-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Michael Dunmore's 18-yard touchdown run with 8:50 remaining. The Mammoths added a 26-yard field goal by Hudson Fulcher-Melendy with 2:17 left to complete the scoring.
Notes
- Ivatts' 147 receiving yards marked a new career high. He has recorded at least 100 receiving yards in back-to-back games to begin the season.
- Kurzum finished 30 of 44 for 280 yards and three touchdowns.
- Kearns recorded two receiving touchdowns in a game for the second time in his career.
- Mat Bucher '27 led all players with 10 tackles. Jack Quinn '28 added nine tackles and accounted for Hamilton's only takeaway with a forced fumble.
- Nick Angelini '28 registered a career-high seven tackles for the Continentals.
- Hamilton's Ryan Zouaoui '29 recorded three tackles and two quarterback hurries.
- Ben Hochadel '27 came up with a fumble recovery for Hamilton.
- Demitrius Smith led Amherst with 71 rushing yards on 19 attempts, while Christian Moore hauled in eight catches for 120 yards.
- Matt Callahan totaled six tackles for the Mammoths.
