Men's lacrosse jumps out to early lead, Wesleyan rallies for 10-9 win

Kraus '28 tied a career high with four points and scooped up a career-best five ground balls

CLINTON, N.Y. – Wesleyan University's Matt Morrow scored four goals and the Cardinals edged the Hamilton College Continentals 10-9 in NESCAC action at Hamilton's breezy and chilly Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon, March 28.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (5-4, 2-3 NESCAC) had their five-game win streak come to an end.
  • Wesleyan (6-2, 2-2) was coming off a 17-12 loss against Bowdoin College last Saturday.

How It Happened

  • Jesse Delinsky '26 gave Hamilton a 7-5 lead on a pass from Carson Kraus '28 with 4:36 left in the second quarter. The Cardinals ran off the next five goals for a 10-7 advantage with 7:45 remaining in the fourth quarter as the Continentals went 27 minutes without scoring. Kyle Short put Wesleyan in the lead for good at 8-7 with his goal in the final seconds of the third quarter.
  • Hamilton tried to rally as Maddux Little '27 scored off a feed from Frank Coyle '26 with 6:59 to go in the fourth, and Ryan Olivo '28 found Kraus for a goal that pulled the Continentals within one with 1:26 left.
  • The Cardinals picked up a one-minute penalty for slashing that started after Kraus' goal. Wesleyan won the faceoff and put a shot on goal that was stopped by Jack Williams '28. Hamilton's clear attempt was successful and the Continentals called a timeout with 1:01 remaining.
  • Kraus whistled the potential game-tying shot towards the net about 30 seconds later, but Conor Selfridge made the save, ventured outside his crease and emerged with the ground ball. The Cardinals brought the ball safely into their offensive zone and ran out the last 15 seconds.
  • Hamilton scored four goals in a row in the first quarter and led 4-1 after the first 15 minutes. The Continentals also held leads of 5-2 and 6-3 in the second quarter. Hamilton was still clinging to a 7-6 edge at halftime.
