Women's freestyle relay highlights Day 2 of NCAA swimming and diving meet

Continentals finished in 16th place overall in the 200-yard free relay

Matthew Chang '28 in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2026 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday, March 19.
INDIANAPOLIS -- Hamilton College placed eighth in the consolation final and 16th overall in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay at the 2026 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships inside IU Indianapolis' IU Natatorium on Thursday, March 19.
 
The Continentals posted a time of 1:34.14 in the evening's finals after they blazed their way to a team-record time of 1:33.65 during the morning's preliminary heats. Carolyn Miner '27, Jade Matthias '26, Paige Wielgus '28 and Chloe Lan '28 were the members of the relay. This marked the third time in the last four championships that Hamilton finished in the top 16 in this event. Matthias, Miner and Lan were also part of the relay at last year's meet. Wielgus is in the championships for the first time.
 
Matthew Chang '28, who was also making his first appearance at the national championships, finished 43rd in the men's 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.19 seconds In prelims. Chang recorded a team-record time of 49.59 seconds in the event earlier this season.
 
Matthias ended up in 31st place out of 50 swimmers in the prelims of the women's 100 fly with a personal-best time of 56.35 seconds that put her second on the team's all-time top 10 list. She was seeded 47th in the event with a time that was a full second slower than what she registered on Thursday. Matthias competed in the event at the NCAA championships for the first time.
 
Charlotte Sorensen '28 wound up in 19th place out of 32 athletes in the prelims of the women's 400 individual medley with a time of 4:28.91. Sorensen missed qualifying for the finals by less than a second. She owns the team record in the event in 4:28.62 and was seeded 28th for the championships.
 
Chang starts a light Friday, March 20 schedule for the Continentals with the men's 100 backstroke. Chang is seeded 14th in the event with a team-record time of 48.07 seconds. Matthias is also seeded 14th in the women's 100 back with a time of 55.61 seconds. She collected an all-America award by finishing 16th in this event at the 2024 meet. Preliminary heats start at 10 a.m. and finals begin at 6 p.m.
