Women’s hockey records 1-1 tie at SUNY Cortland, wins shootout

Puskar ’27 scored the tying goal in the third period for the Continentals

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Grace Puskar '27 put away the equalizing goal with 8:05 left in the third period and the Continentals registered a 1-1 non-conference tie against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons at Cortland's Alumni Arena on Tuesday evening, Feb. 10.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (11-6-5 overall) played its final non-conference game of the regular season and was coming off back-to-back conference victories over Bowdoin College.
  • Cortland (12-5-4), which has a 6-2-2 record in SUNYAC play, is unbeaten in its last 11 games.

How It Happened

  • Holding a 1-0 lead with just under 16 minutes left in the third, Cortland created a quick transition opportunity and put a shot on goal that was saved by Teagan Brown '27. Brown extended her leg to stop the rebound opportunity from point-blank range at the opposite post.
  • With just under 10 minutes remaining, Sadie Klein '29 stole the puck at the red line and looped around to the left boards. Klein skated past two Red Dragon defenders and took a shot from close range that was saved by Cortland's Eline Gillodes.
  • The Continentals tied the score with a little more than eight minutes to go after they tracked down a loose puck just beyond the left faceoff circle in their offensive zone. Lilly Truchon '26 shielded the puck and dropped it off to Puskar who fired a one-timer towards the top of the net that beat Gillodes.
  • Hamilton nearly found the go-ahead goal with just over one minute remaining in the third. Sophia Rodham '27 drove the puck from the left boards along the goal line and centered a pass to Katie Allen '26 in the low slot. Allen's one-timer was on target but Gillodes reacted quickly and made the glove save, and the teams went to overtime.
  • Hamilton held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal during the overtime period.
  • Rodham skated into the edge of the left faceoff circle early in overtime and sent a pass to her right for Truchon, whose shot was saved by Gillodes.
  • Cortland went on a power play with 27 seconds remaining. The Red Dragons won the offensive zone faceoff and worked the puck around, but their final shot was saved by Brown with 14 seconds remaining.
  • Both goaltenders continued their stellar play in the shootout as neither team found the back of the net in their first six attempts. After Cortland missed in the seventh round, Cuora Sullivan '26 made a quick move just outside the crease from right to left and lifted a backhand shot into the roof of the net that secured the shootout win for Hamilton.
  • Cortland went on a power play just over one minute into the first period, but Hamilton limited the Red Dragons to one shot on goal during the two minutes.
  • Cortland broke the scoreless tie 11:46 into the first. Katie Diem received a pass from Carlen Bertrand along the right boards, skated through the right circle and poked a shot that snuck past Brown.
  • Truchon found herself free in the right circle with 38 seconds left in the first and fired a low shot that was saved by Gillodes.
  • Both sides recorded six shots on goal during a scoreless second period.
