Trinity narrowly defeats women’s basketball in overtime thriller

Lambo ’26 recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Trinity College's Avery Marzo scored a game-high 23 points with five 3-pointers in the Bantams' 87-82 overtime win against the Hamilton College Continentals on Hamilton's Coach Tom Murphy Court inside Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 17.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (9-8, 1-2 NESCAC) suffered its first home loss of the season. The Continentals defeated Wesleyan University 63-49 on Jan. 16.
  • The Bantams (13-5, 2-2), who are 23rd in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III Top 25 poll and received votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, rebounded from a 61-50 loss at Amherst College on Jan. 16.

How It Happened

  • Trinity trailed 58-52 at the end of the third quarter. The Bantams shot 8-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, in the fourth and outscored the Continentals 22-16 to send the contest to overtime. Marzo provided 10 points in the fourth and Maya Carnes added seven.
  • Kendall Harris '27 scored the final basket of regulation with 20 seconds remaining and tied the score at 74-74.
  • Hamilton took an 80-77 lead with 2:31 remaining in overtime after Abbey Schwoebel '27 received a pass from Taylor Lambo '26 and sank a jumper from the short corner.
  • Trinity closed the contest on a 10-2 run with the help of a layup and 3-pointer by Marzo.
  • The first quarter featured three ties and four lead changes. Hamilton took its first lead at 8-7 with 6:15 left after Hannah Bernstein '28 led Lambo to the basket for a layup in transition.
  • Maggie Kernodle '29 drove and finished a layup through contact that tied the score at 15-15 for the Continentals with 1:15 remaining. Trinity's Fione Neilon sank a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left for an 18-15 lead after 10 minutes of action.
  • Four more lead changes occurred during the second quarter. Trinity established a four-point advantage for the second time in the quarter at 25-21 with 5:22 remaining, but Althea Hill '26 drained a 3-pointer during Hamilton's next possession.
  • The Continentals scored five straight via a 3-pointer by Erica Hills '28 and a jumper in the paint by Kernodle for a 31-27 lead with 3:23 left.
  • Trinity ended the half on a 9-2 burst and went back in front, 36-33.
  • Lambo got to the rim consistently in the third quarter, scoring 10 of her team-high 22 points.
  • A 3-pointer by Lucy Dorion with 6:43 left gave Trinity its largest lead of six at 43-37, but Hamilton responded with a 13-2 run and took a 50-45 edge at the 3:10 mark.
  • Harris found Kernodle for a 3-pointer just before the buzzer and the Continentals carried their largest advantage of six points into the fourth.


Notes

  • Lambo recorded her seventh double-double in the last eight games with 22 points and 12 rebounds. She added four assists and three blocks in a season-high 41 minutes played.
  • Harris distributed a career-high eight assists to go along with 12 points and nine rebounds. Harris and Lambo have each scored in double figures in 13 games this season.
  • Schwoebel scored in double figures for the second consecutive game with 13 points and grabbed four offensive rebounds.
  • Kernodle provided a season-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
  • Hills and Bernstein added nine points apiece.
  • Trinity knocked down a season-high 10 made 3-pointers and shot 55.6 percent from deep.
  • Marzo also contributed five assists to go along with her game high in points.
  • Carnes finished with 17 points and Dorion registered 14.
  • Marlo Simms and Melissa Whitmore pulled down a team-high seven rebounds apiece. Both players scored in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Hamilton remains at home to host Amherst (11-4, 2-1) on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.
