Volleyball drops last two matches at William Smith Tournament

Allen '27 represented the Continentals on the all-tournament team

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Hamilton College Continentals dropped both of their matches on the second and final day of the 2025 William Smith College Tournament inside Bristol Gym on Saturday, Sept. 6.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton dipped to 1-2 overall this fall. The Continentals defeated Alfred University in four sets on Friday, Sept. 5.
  • Buffalo State College (1-5) had not won a set in its first five matches.
  • William Smith (5-0) swept its opponent in three sets for the third straight match.

How It Happened

  • The score was tied at 22-22 in the first set, but the Bengals recorded a kill and a block on the next two points, and a kill by Ella Wittman on set point.
  • Hamilton had three set point opportunities in the second set, but Buffalo State thwarted each one. The Bengals finally closed out the set with kills by Wittman and Karlie Shaffer.
  • The Continentals led by as many as nine points at 20-11 in the third set. An Ayzlinn Trefren '28 kill and block assists by Caitlin Allen '27 and Allie Steel '28 secured the set victory.
  • Hamilton trailed by five points three times in the fourth set, but rallied to tie the score at 24-24. A bad set by the Continentals and another kill by Wittman ended the match.
 

Notes

  • Steel led Hamilton with a career-high 12 kills and added three blocks.
  • Trefren chipped in 11 kills and a team-best 18 digs.
  • Allen, who was named to the all-tournament team, tied her career high with nine blocks including four solo.
  • Grace Jansen '29 topped the Continentals with 26 assists and four aces and added 13 digs.
  • Zua Vang '29 contributed 12 digs and three aces.
  • Hamilton held advantages in aces (13-5) and total blocks (12-5), but committed 30 attack errors.

How It Happened

  • The Herons ran off five straight points for a 12-7 lead in the first set and stayed in front the rest of the way. Malya Sayre ended the set with a kill.
  • William Smith held a nine-point cushion at 20-11 at one point in the second set. Hope Von Dohlen clinched the second set for the Herons with a kill.
  • Hamilton trailed 24-20 and fought off four match points as the Continentals ran off five straight. Trefren had two kills during the run, including the point that put Hamilton up 25-24. Sayre tied the score with a kill with the Continentals trying to send the match to a fourth set, and a block by Von Dohlen ended it four points later.
 

Notes

  • Allen helped lead Hamilton with 10 kills and three blocks. She had just one attack error in 18 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage.
  • Steel matched Allen with 10 kills.
  • Trefren posted 11 digs, eight kills and the team's only two aces.
  • Jansen passed out 17 assists while Lucy Proud '29 handed out 15.
  • Vang led the defense with 23 digs – the most by any of the Continentals all weekend.

Hamilton hosts Clark University (0-2) for a non-conference match on Friday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.
