Volleyball splits two matches at Margaret Bundy Scott Field House

Continentals evened their record at 3-3 with a three-set victory over SUNY Morrisville

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Hamilton College Continentals split a pair of non-conference matches inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 13.
 

Season Update

  • The Continentals (3-3 overall) fell in four sets (25-18, 15-25, 29-27, 25-15) against the St. John Fisher University Cardinals and swept the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs in three sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-17).
  • St. John Fisher (8-1) is receiving votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll.
  • Morrisville (6-4) won one out of three matches at Hamilton during the weekend.

How It Happened

  • A four-point run by the Continentals broke a 17-17 tie in the first set, highlighted by two Lucy Proud '29 service aces. Ayzlinn Trefren '28 ended the set with a kill.
  • Hamilton jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set and remained in control the rest of the way. A Maggie Nichols '26 kill closed out the set.
  • The Continentals trailed 14-13 in the third set, but they ran off six of the next seven points and cruised to the sweep. Two kills by Nichols put Hamilton in the lead for good, and Grace Seaman '29 finished the match with a kill.
 

Notes

  • Elodie McGeiver '27 led the Continentals with eight kills.
  • Proud contributed four aces and 11 assists.
  • Grace Jansen '29 handed out 13 assists and helped lead the defense with 11 digs.
  • Zua Vang '29 topped Hamilton with 14 digs.
  • Kathryn Fox '27 and Caitlin Allen '27 boasted three blocks apiece. Allen is fourth in the NESCAC with 1.20 blocks per set.
  • Trefren added 11 digs and seven kills.
  • The Continentals won their fifth straight meeting with the Mustangs.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton led 16-15 in the first set, but the Cardinals went in front for good with three straight points and ended the set with a 6-0 run.
  • The Continentals sprinted out to a 10-2 lead in the second set and was never threatened. Allen had two kills in the set-ending 5-0 spurt.
  • Hamilton was a point away from taking a two-sets-to-one lead at 24-21, but St. John Fisher erased four match points, including when the Cardinals trailed 25-24. The score was 27-27 when an Ana Gutman kill and a Kalyna Dannenberg ace finally ended the pivotal set.
  • In the fourth set St. John Fisher broke a 4-4 tie by running off 10 of the next 11 points as the Cardinals took control of the set and the match.
 

Notes

  • St. John Fisher held a 51-35 advantage in kills.
  • Allie Steel '28 paced the Continentals with eight kills and two aces.
  • Vang came up with 26 digs – the highest total by a Hamilton player so far this season.
  • Jansen registered 16 assists and 10 digs, and Proud chipped in 11 assists and 11 digs.
  • Allen led the Continentals' defense at the net again with five blocks, while Fox added four.
 

Next Match

Hamilton hosts Tufts University (6-1) for its NESCAC opener on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
