Men’s lacrosse holds off Conn. College in tight NESCAC thriller, 12-11

Fried '25 saves the lead for the Continentals with his stop in the final seconds

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Jack Fried '25 came up with a clutch point-blank save with less than five seconds left and the Continentals outlasted the Connecticut College Camels 12-11 in NESCAC action at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon, April 19.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (7-7, 4-6 NESCAC) is in sixth place in the conference standings and will wait for the NESCAC Men's Lacrosse Championship seeding release the evening of Wednesday, April 23. The top eight teams advance to the conference championship quarterfinals on Saturday, April 26.
  • The Camels (7-7, 2-7) dropped their third straight conference contest.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton capitalized on a Camels turnover early in the fourth quarter. Justin Pearl '25 charged in from the right side and found Thomas Healy '26 wide open in front of the net. Healy took the feed and skipped a shot off the turf and into the goal for a 10-9 lead with 12:15 to go.
  • Conn. College answered less than a minute later, but Hamilton responded with back-to-back goals for a 12-10 lead with 7:58 left. Troy Pollock '25 broke the tie with a strike from long-distance, and Healy struck again 46 seconds later after he corralled a high pass, sliced through three defenders, and finished strong in front of the net.
  • The Camels gave the ball away on back-to-back possessions with bad passes, but after a Hamilton turnover they managed a successful clear and cut the deficit to one with just 44 seconds remaining.
  • Hamilton won the ensuing faceoff, but a turnover gave Conn. College one last chance. After scooping up the loose ball, the Camels called a timeout with 17.3 seconds remaining to draw up a final play. As the clock wound down, Liam Horkan broke free for a point-blank look, but Fried laid out for the clutch save and sealed a crucial conference win for the Continentals.
  • Hamilton struck first with 10:22 remaining in the opening quarter as Carson Kraus '28 put the Continentals on the board. After receiving a pass, Kraus shook his defender with a slick juke, cut to the right, and ripped a one-hopper into the back of the net.
  • Hamilton made it 2-0 with 7:04 to go in the first, capitalizing on another Camel turnover. Frank Coyle '26 started the play from behind the net, cut to the left, and delivered a pass to Jesse Delinsky '26. Delinsky caught it in stride down the middle and fired a shot from just outside the crease into the top-right corner.
  • Less than two minutes later, Hamilton added a third goal. Long-stick midfielder Jayme Wilde '25 scooped up a loose ball in the Camels' attack zone, sprinted down the field, and unleashed a powerful shot past Conn. College's Patrick Hogan with 5:33 left in the first.
  • Conn. College cut the Continentals' lead to 3-1 just 11 seconds into the second quarter, but Kraus answered with his second goal and pushed Hamilton's lead to 4-1 with 13 minutes remaining. The Camels trimmed Hamilton's lead to one with a goal at the 10:55 mark.
  • The Continentals quickly responded by scoring twice in a span of just 42 seconds. Wyatt Estepp '27 split two defenders and fired a shot into the upper-right corner. Will Heher '25 scored with 7:58 remaining in the second quarter. Sean Gebauer '25 won the faceoff and, after a few passes, Heher drove down the middle and finished with a clinical shot into the net for a 6-2 lead.
  • Conn. College's offense came alive as the Camels closed out the second quarter with five unanswered goals and took a 7-6 lead into halftime.
  • The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle as the rain poured down, but Hamilton broke through first with two goals just 45 seconds apart. A costly turnover by the Camels set up the first, and with five seconds left on the shot clock, Coyle ripped a low shot under his defender that snuck through the legs of Hogan and tied the score at 7–7. Moments later, Pollock caught the defense off guard with another low strike that put the Continentals back in front. The Camels pulled even again with 11:29 left.
  • Hamilton answered just a few minutes later. Coyle found Estepp cutting on the left wing, and Estepp buried a top-shelf shot for a 9–8 lead with 8:37 to go.
  • Conn. College had the last word in the third quarter, and the score was tied as the teams headed into the final frame.
