Women's basketball falls behind early in 12-point setback at Williams

Continentals face a must-win game at Middlebury on Saturday, Feb. 15 to keep their season alive

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams College took the lead for good midway through the first quarter and the Ephs went on defeat the Hamilton College Continentals 66-54 in a NESCAC duel inside Williams' Chandler Gymnasium on Friday, Feb. 14.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (15-8, 4-5 NESCAC) is tied for seventh place in the NESCAC standings with Williams and Middlebury College and likely needs a win against the Panthers to play in next Saturday's conference championship quarterfinals.
  • Williams (14-9, 4-5), which won for the third time in its last four games, was playing at home for the first time since Jan. 11.
 

How it Happened

  • Williams got off to a hot start in the first five minutes as Mairi Smith scored six points and the Ephs led 14-9 heading into the second quarter.
  • Annabelle Semeter '28 led the Continentals in the second quarter with five points, including a jumper with 3:01 left, that kept Hamilton within striking distance at 27-23.
  • The Continentals cut Williams' lead to 28-25 with 1:50 to go in the quarter, but Arianna Gerig and Tatum Leuenberger combined to score seven straight points and the Ephs held a 35-25 advantage at the half.
  • Hamilton's defense had a great third quarter as Williams was 3-of-15 from the field and committed three turnovers. The Continentals cut their deficit to just three points at 44-41 heading into the fourth.
  • The third quarter comeback was led by Sam Glickman '25, Semeter and Kendall Harris '27. Glickman posted five points, two rebounds and a blocked shot.
  • Williams opened the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run and led by double digits for the final 7:45.
  • Cortland McBarron helped close the door on the Continentals in the fourth with seven points, three rebounds and two assists.
 

Notes

  • Hamilton outscored the Ephs 28-24 in points in the paint.
  • Harris scored a team-high 17 points, marking the 19th time she has done that this season.
  • The Continentals were without their star post player Taylor Lambo '26, who is averaging a double-double this season. Lambo is out for the season with an injury.
  • Abbey Schwoebel '27 tied her career high with 10 points and added six rebounds.
  • Tessa Cole '25 led the team in assists with three.
  • Williams held a commanding 48-31 advantage on the glass as two players recorded a double-double and a third missed one by a rebound.
  • Smith topped the Ephs with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
  • McBarron chipped in 14 points and nine boards off the bench.
  • Gerig contributed 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.
  • Ellie Tounkara had 11 points and a game-high five assists. 
  • The Continentals shot 36.7 percent (22-60) from the field, including 5-of-12 from beyond the arc, and were just 5-for-11 at the free-throw line.
  • Williams was 7-of-13 from the floor in the opening 10 minutes. The Ephs were 4-of-9 from three-point range in the fourth quarter after they made just one during the first 30 minutes.

The Continentals wrap up their regular season at Middlebury (14-9, 4-5) on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m.
