Heartbreaking shootout loss for No. 9 field hockey in NESCAC quarterfinals

Janssen '28 perfect again in the cage with five saves for the Continentals

LEWISTON, Maine - Hamilton College's Kelly Janssen '28 came up big with five saves, but the Continentals lost 1-0 against the Bates College Bobcats after two overtimes and a shootout in a 2025 NESCAC Field Hockey Championship quarterfinal at Bates' Campus Avenue Field on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 1.

Season Update

  • The ninth-ranked Continentals (11-5 overall) were the sixth seed for the championship. Hamilton learns whether it has done enough to receive an NCAA tournament bid on Sunday night, Nov. 9.
  • The sixth-ranked Bobcats (13-3) are the third seed for the championship. Bates travels to Tufts University and faces off against No. 2 seed Middlebury College in a NESCAC semifinal on Saturday, Nov. 8.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton's best scoring opportunity came in the second overtime on an Olivia Waruch '28 run. Waruch gained momentum down the field and found Claire Tratnyek '26 on the right side of the circle for a shot that went just wide.
  • The Continentals' Morgan Clarke '28 made a defensive save following a penalty corner by the Bobcats about three minutes into the third quarter.
  • Bates put the pressure on the Hamilton defense in the final minute of the fourth quarter with three corners and three shots.
  • Isabelle Nahon '27 scored the lone Hamilton goal out of five attempts in the shootout.
  • Elena Agosti and Brooke Moloney-Kolenberg scored for the Bobcats in the shootout.

Notes

  • Janssen came into the game ranked second in the conference in both save percentage (.795) and goals against average (0.95). She recorded her second career shutout in just three starts. The only goal Janssen has allowed in her last 300 minutes played was on a penalty stroke.
  • Clarke's defensive save was her fourth of the season and 10th of her career. She is third in the NESCAC with those four defensive stops.
  • Hamilton defended off three green card infractions while Bates had one.
  • The Continentals were awarded five corners to the Bobcats' eight.
  • Hamilton handed Bates its first loss of the season on Oct. 5, 2-1.
  • The Continentals had both of their shots on goal in the second quarter.
  • Hamilton has gone to a shootout five times this year.
