Memorable field hockey season ends in NCAA championship second round

Continentals drop 1-0 decision against NESCAC foe Wesleyan at Babson College

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Wesleyan University's Leila Feldman scored with 4:49 left in the first quarter and that was all the Cardinals needed in their 1-0 win against the Hamilton College Continentals in a 2025 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship second round game at Babson College's MacDowell Field on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 15.

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 12 Hamilton (12-6) finished their best season under Head Coach Missy Mariano and ended up just one win short of matching the program record (Continentals went 13-3 in 2010).
  • No. 7 Wesleyan (16-4) won for the 12th time in its last 13 games. The Cardinals play Babson in the NCAA quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.

How It Happened

  • Emily Smith hammered a pass from the right side of the arc across the front of the cage and Feldman one-timed a shot inside the left post.
  • Hamilton's first shot came off its first penalty corner early in the second quarter when a chance by Claire Tratnyek '26 bounced wide of the cage.
  • Midway through the second, a shot by the Continentals' Isabelle Nahon '27 was blocked following a corner. Wesleyan dominated the quarter with 11 shots and seven corners.
  • Hamilton came out of halftime with some purpose as Becky Felker '26 took a shot that passed wide of the cage less than a minute into the third quarter.
  • The Continentals' last hope at tying the score was a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter that didn't result in a shot. Hamilton pulled goalie Kelly Janssen '28 for an extra field player with a little than three minutes remaining but the move didn't result in any shots.

Notes

  • Janssen made a season-high eight saves for the Continentals. She finished with a 0.85 goals against average and .820 save percentage in 779-plus minutes in the cage.
  • The Cardinals held a 17-3 shot advantage and were awarded eight corners to Hamilton's three.
  • Wesleyan avenged a 4-1 home loss to the Continentals on Sept. 13.
  • Hamilton had won nine of the previous 10 meetings between the teams going into Saturday.
  • Both teams were making their second NCAA championship appearance.
  • The Continentals were playing in the second round for the first time.
  • Wesleyan has allowed a total of three shots in two NCAA championship games this week.
