CLINTON, N.Y. – Tufts University's Hudson Weidman threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns in the Jumbos' 38-28 win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 18.
Season Update
- The Continentals (1-4 NESCAC) lost their third straight game, but scored a season-high 28 points.
- Tufts (3-3) had dropped its previous three contests.
How It Happened
- The Jumbos scored touchdowns on their first two possessions. Keller Rogers scored on a 43-yard pass from Weidman with 9:46 left in the first quarter. Weidman completed a six-yard pass to Christian Shapiro for another touchdown as time expired in the quarter. The play ended an 85-yard drive that took more than eight minutes off the clock. Vaughn Seelicke, who went 5-for-5 on extra points, made it 14-0.
- Hamilton roared back with touchdowns on its next two drives. Quarterback Luke Kurzum '27 ran around right end and dove inside the pylon for a 16-yard touchdown with 10:28 remaining in the second quarter.
- The Continentals drew even with 3:14 to go at the end of an 86-yard drive. Kurzum faked a handoff and lofted a pass to Alastair Orr '28, who caught it on the left side at the 10 and carried two tacklers into the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown. Carmelo Velardo '27 added the PAT and made it 14-14.
- Tufts got the ball back and marched 71 yards inside the Hamilton 10. The Jumbos' drive stalled there and Seelicke kicked a 26-yard field goal with 7.9 seconds left. Tufts took a 17-14 advantage into the locker room.
- The Jumbos led the rest of the way. Shapiro found the end zone from three yards out with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter, and Weidman threw a four-yard pass to tight end Jack Elliott for a touchdown that made it 30-14 with 11:59 to go in the fourth quarter.
- The Continentals refused to give up. Kurzum threw deep down the right sideline to Matthew Kearns '28 who caught it inside the 10 and was tackled as he crossed the goal line for a 40-yard touchdown with 9:51 left.
- Tufts was forced to punt with less than four minutes remaining but the snap sailed over the punter's head and he fell on the ball at the Jumbos' own 15-yard line where Hamilton took over. On the next play Kurzum found Mitchell Ivatts '29 over the middle in the end zone for the touchdown with 3:32 to go. Velardo's extra point pulled the Continentals within three points at 31-28.
- Hamilton tried an onside kick but the ball bounced out-of-bounds and Tufts took over at the Continentals 46. Shapiro clinched the win for the Jumbos on the next play when he scampered 46 yards for a touchdown and a nine-point lead with 3:20 left.
Notes
- Kurzum was 21-of-35 for 277 yards and tied a career high with three touchdown passes. He also ran for a season-best 67 yards and scored his first rushing touchdown of 2025. Kurzum either passed or ran for all four of Hamilton's scores. He's third in the NESCAC with 11 touchdown passes and 1,488 yards.
- Orr caught a career-high 12 passes, including his third touchdown, for 107 yards. The 100-yard receiving game was his second this season.
- Kearns is tied for fifth in the conference with four touchdown catches and is fifth with 18.3 yards per reception.
- Ivatts scored his first touchdown with the Continentals.
- Frank Ruiz '26 led the Hamilton defense with a career-high eight stops including 1.5 tackles for loss.
- Ian Redzepagic '28 chipped in a career-best seven tackles, including six solo stops, and broke up two passes.
- Henry Rubey '26 averaged 45.3 yards on three punts with a long of 51 and pinned two of them inside the Tufts 20.
- Velardo was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points and is 12-for-13 this season.
- Shapiro ran for 120 yards on just 19 carries and scored a total of three touchdowns for the Jumbos. Henry Fleckner topped the team with seven receptions for 98 yards. Ryan Horigan was credited with a game-high nine tackles including one of Tufts' four sacks. Suleiman Abuaqel posted two sacks.
- The Jumbos had 29 first downs and 474 yards of offense, but hurt themselves with 10 penalties for 105 yards. Tufts was 9-of-15 on third down conversions.
- The Continentals registered a season-high 21 first downs and racked up 385 yards of offense.
