MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College's Kristyn Carroll finished 5-for-6 at the plate and Jewel Ashbrook tossed a shutout in Game 2 as the Panthers completed a NESCAC doubleheader sweep of the Hamilton College Continentals at the Middlebury Softball Field on Saturday, May 4.
Season Update
- The Continentals (16-19, 9-9 NESCAC) are in sixth place in the conference standings. The top eight teams advance to the NESCAC championship which will be played from May 10 to May 12.
- Middlebury (23-11,12-6) posted a 6-2 victory in the opener and a 3-0 shutout win in Game 2. The Panthers have finished their regular season and are in third place in the standings.
Game 1
How It Happened
- Middlebury tacked on its first run in the first inning on a walk and two stolen bases.
- Hamilton evened the score in the top of the third on two hits. Hadley Rogers '26 led the inning off with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ella Heftved '25 and eventually scored on a two-out single to center by Alexis Mayer '26.
- The Panthers regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half on two singles and a walk.
- Middlebury widened the gap with three more runs in the fifth on four hits.
- The Continentals plated their second and final run in the seventh on three hits. Charlie Quinn '25 hit a lead-off infield single and moved to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Sofia Santana '26. Julia Hacker '27 replaced Quinn as a pinch runner and scored on a single to the right center gap by Alison Zorn '26. Hamilton had two runners on with no outs but the Panthers were able to retire the side with three straight outs.
Notes
- Zorn paced Hamilton with two hits, including her 15th career double. She leads the Continentals with 21 runs batted in.
- Mayer drove in her 17th run of the season and leads the team with 35 hits.
- Merklin kept her hit steak alive with a single.
- Quinn contributed her 26th hit of the season while Natalie Beebe '24 notched her 28th of the year.
Game 2
How It Happened
- Scoreless through 2.5 innings, the Panthers struck in the bottom of the third with one run on a lead-off triple and a passed ball.
- Middlebury added a pair of insurance runs on a two-out home run down the left field line by Jennifer Westphal.
Notes
- Zorn and Merklin combined for Hamilton's two hits.
- Carroll led Middlebury with three hits.
- Westphal drove in a team-best two runs on the two-run homer.
- Olivia Scholes finished 1-for-2 with a single and a walk.
- Ashbrook scooped up her eighth win of the season in a complete game effort.
