No. 8 women's hockey stopped by No. 3 Adrian in NCAA quarters

McGennis '24 scored the lone goal for the Continentals in 4-1 setback

ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College's Tia Lascelle recorded a hat trick and the Bulldogs defeated the Hamilton College Continentals 4-1 in a 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Hockey Championship quarterfinal inside Adrian's Arrington Ice Arena on Saturday, March 9.

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 8 Hamilton (16-7-6 overall) was one win away from advancing to the NCAA semifinals for the second year in a row. The Continentals were playing their seventh straight game against a top 10 opponent.
  • The third-ranked Bulldogs (28-2-0) play the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in a national semifinal at UW-River Falls on Friday, March 15. Adrian extended its win streak to 21 games and finished 16-0 at home.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton held a 12-8 shot advantage in the first period, but the Bulldogs led 2-1 after the opening 20 minutes.
  • Sydnie Crockett put Adrian on the scoreboard with 8:01 left and Lascelle added a power-play goal with 6:19 remaining.
  • Claire McGennis '24 cut the Continentals' deficit in half with 3:16 to go. Hamilton broke out of its defensive zone and it turned into an odd-player rush for the Continentals. Lisa Ito-Bagshaw '25 sent the puck towards the net from the top of the left faceoff circle and McGennis tipped it past the goaltender from the low slot.
  • Hamilton threatened to tie the score late in the first. One of the Bulldogs was sent to the penalty box for hooking with 1:48 left and the Continentals put four shots on goal, but couldn't get the equalizer.
  • It remained a one-goal game until Lascelle scored with 2:11 remaining in the second period. Lascelle's third goal on the power play again at 9:51 of the third period clinched it for Adrian.

Notes

  • McGennis led Hamilton with 14 goals this season. She finished her career with 21 goals and 43 points for the Continentals.
  • Ito-Bagshaw recorded an assist in both NCAA games and had six helpers this season.
  • Ava Romano '27 also had an assist in the NCAA first round and quarterfinals and ended up with five in her rookie season.
  • Teagan Brown '27, who grew up in Northville, Mich., about an hour from Adrian, made 29 saves for Hamilton.
  • Maya Roy picked up three assists and Une Bjelland had two for the Bulldogs.
  • Michaela O'Brien turned away 11 shots in the first period and finished with 20 stops.
  • Adrian was 2-for-2 on the power play while the Continentals were 0-for-2.
