Natalie Beebe '24 pitched a shutout in the opener and
Alexis Mayer '26 used her bat to help lead the Continentals to a NESCAC sweep of the Wesleyan University Cardinals at the Wesleyan Softball Field on Friday, March 22.
Season Update
- Hamilton (8-6, 2-0 NESCAC) won its third straight contest.
- Wesleyan moved to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the NESCAC.
Game 1
How It Happened
- Hamilton opened the scoring with four runs in the first inning. Mayer zipped a one-out, RBI double to left field and scored on a single up the middle by Alison Zorn '26. Beebe smacked a single to left and Zorn scored on an error. Charlie Quinn '25 drove in Beebe on an infield single to shortstop.
- After three scoreless innings, the Continentals plated its fifth and final run in the top of the fifth on two hits and an error. Mayer led off with a double to center, advanced to third on a wild pitch and was knocked in on a sacrifice fly to center by Zorn.
Notes
- Mayer finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
- Beebe tallied two singles.
- Zorn plated her eighth run of the season.
- Quinn drove in her second run this season.
- Jordan Merklin '26 and Alessandra Priante '24 stole one base apiece.
- Beebe secured her first win in the circle scattering seven hits in seven innings and striking out seven batters for her fourth career shutout.
Game 2
How It Happened
- The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on three singles.
- Hamilton countered with three runs on two hits and one error in the top of the third. Ella Heftved '25 smacked a lead-off triple and scored on a single by Priante. The Continentals had two runners on after Merklin reached first on a fielder's choice. Emma Tansky '25 knocked it back to the pitcher and Priante and Merklin crossed home plate on a fielding error.
- Wesleyan cut its deficit to 3-2 with one run in the fifth.
- Hamilton responded with another run in the top of the sixth on three hits. Mayer started off the inning with a triple to center and Quinn knocked her in on a single to left.
- The Cardinals knotted the score at 4-4 with a pair of runs on four hits in the bottom half.
- With the pressure on, the Continentals answered with the go-ahead run on two hits in the seventh. Merklin ignited the rally with a double to left field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Gabby Garrison '27. With one out, Mayer played the hero and drove in Merklin on a single to left field.
- Tansky replaced Teagan Graham '25 in the circle in the bottom of the inning and retired the side in order to secure the sweep.
Notes
- Mayer led Hamilton at the plate with three hits, including her second triple of the season. She leads the team with 19 hits, 13 RBI and a .396 batting average.
- Heftved recorded a single, a double and a triple.
- Merklin scored a team-best two runs and tallied her second double of the season.
- Graham (3-1) allowed four runs on eight hits, walked two batters and struck out two in six innings pitched. She has six career wins.
- Tansky earned her first save this season and the second of her career.
- Lizzie Marino and Jordynn Killion led Wesleyan with two hits apiece.
Next Game
Hamilton travels to Hartford, Conn., to face Trinity College (6-5 overall) for another NESCAC road doubleheader on Sunday, March 24 starting at noon.
