No. 8 women’s hockey falls short in quest for first NESCAC title

Continentals lost 4-0 against seventh-ranked Middlebury in the conference final

AMHERST, Mass. – Middlebury College had four players score and the Panthers shut out the Hamilton College Continentals 4-0 in the 2024 New England Small College Athletic Conference Women's Hockey Championship final inside Amherst College's Orr Rink on Saturday, March 2. 
 
Season Update
  • Nationally ranked No. 8 Hamilton (15-6-6 overall) was the No. 4 seed for the championship. The Continentals will have to wait to find out if they receive one of the three at-large bids to the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Hockey Championship. The selection show airs on NCAA.com on Sunday, March 3 at 8:30 p.m. 
  • The seventh-ranked Panthers (16-6-4) were the No. 2 seed for the championship. Middlebury earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA championship by winning its 12th NESCAC title. The Panthers won the conference championship in 2022.  
How It Happened
  • Middlebury opened the scoring with 29.1 seconds left in the first period on a goal by Cat Appleyard from the center of the left faceoff circle. Sabrina Kim and Jordan Hower had the assists. 
  • The Panthers doubled its lead on a power-play goal by Callia Ferraris with 5:55 remaining in the second period. 
  • Kylie Quinlan made it 3-0 just 35 seconds later. 
  • The Panthers scored their final goal with 6:16 left in the third period when Raia Schluter took a feed from Julia Johnson.  
Notes
  • The Continentals were playing in the NESCAC final for the second consecutive year.
  • Hamilton owned a 25-17 shot advantage.  
  • The Continentals were 0-for-2 on the power play, while Middlebury went 1-for-2 with an extra skater. 
  • Bobbi Roca '24 won 16 of 26 faceoffs and blocked two shots. 
  • Mac Donovan '26 made 10 saves in the first two periods. Evie Sheridan '26 relieved Donovan and made three stops in the third. 
  • Sophia Will made 11 of her 25 saves in the second period for the Panthers.
