Women’s basketball season ends in NESCAC quarters at No. 23 Bates

Harris ’27 recorded 17 points, three steals and three blocked shots for the Continentals

LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College's Morgan Kennedy netted 17 points and the third-seeded Bobcats captured a 66-50 win over the Hamilton College Continentals in a 2024 NESCAC Women's Basketball Championship quarterfinal inside Bates' Alumni Gym on Saturday, Feb. 17. 
 
How It Happened
  • Bates scored the first seven points of the contest for an early lead with 6:53 on the clock. 
  • Kendall Harris '27 and Taylor Lambo '26 scored consecutive layups to cut Bates' advantage to 7-4 with 4:58 to go. 
  • The Bobcats responded with the next two baskets for an 11-4 cushion with 3:17 remaining in the first quarter. 
  • Harris blocked a shot and buried a jumper on the other end on a pass from Emily Hall '24 to trail by just one possession at 11-8 with 2:25 left. Lambo shortened the Bobcats' lead to just two on a free throw with 1:41 on the clock. 
  • Bates' Sarah Hughes closed out the opening quarter on a jumper for a 13-9 lead. 
  • Elsa Daulerio opened the second quarter on a jumper, but Harris countered with a 3-pointer on a pass from Courtney Shay '24 to trail 15-12 with 9:23 left in the second quarter. 
  • After a classic three-point play by Bates, Hall netted her own 3-pointer to trail by three points at 18-15 with 8:09 to go.
  • Bates sparked an 8-2 run for a 26-17 cushion with 2:28 remaining. 
  • Maria Mercado Rengel '24 hit a 3-pointer to slice the Continentals' deficit to six points at 29-23 heading into halftime. 
  • Bates started the third stanza on an 11-0 run for a 40-23 cushion with seven minutes remaining.
  • The Bobcats outscored the Continentals 9-3 over the span of the next 2:30 for a commanding 23-point lead at 49-26 with 4:28 left in the third quarter. 
  • Lambo netted Hamilton's first six points of the final quarter to trail by 18 points at 57-39 with 5:34 to go. 
  • The Continentals got as close as 15 at 64-49 on a free throw by Sophie Thompson '24 with 1:02 remaining. 
  • Hamilton shot 28.1 percent (16-57) from the floor, and went 13-for-22 at the charity stripe.
  • Bates shot 41 percent (25-61) from the field, including 5 of 11 from beyond the arc, and went 11-for-14 at the line. 
  • The Bobcats blocked 10 shots and held a 19-7 advantage in bench points. 
Notes
  • Bates (21-4 overall) advances to the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. 
  • The Bobcats defeated Hamilton 82-66 back on Jan. 12 in Maine. 
  • Harris recorded 17 points, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals. 
  • Lambo tallied 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. 
  • Hall contributed seven points, six boards, five assists and four steals. 
  • Piper Seamon '24 finished with seven points and Shay grabbed seven rebounds. 
  • Mercado Rengel added six points and six rebounds. 
  • Kennedy also registered six rebounds and three blocked shots for the Bobcats. 
  • Daulerio dropped in 16 points, grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, blocked four shots and made three steals. 
  • Hughes notched 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. 
  • Davina Kabantu had seven points and five rebounds. 
Season Recap
Hamilton finished its season with an overall record of 17-8. The Continentals finished in sixth place in the conference standings with a 5-5 record and were the sixth seed for the championship.
