Men’s basketball season ends in first round of NESCAC Championship

Morgan ’25 led Hamilton with 23 points in season finale

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams College's Cole Prowitt-Smith and Brandon Roughley netted 19 points apiece and the top-seeded Ephs posted a 67-47 win over the Hamilton College Continentals in a 2024 NESCAC Men's Basketball Championship quarterfinal at Williams' Chandler Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 17. 

How It Happened
  • Scoreless through the first 2:08 in the second half, Williams scored a jumper, forced a Hamilton turnover and hit a layup for a 37-34 lead with 17:17 on the clock.  
  • Hank Morgan '25 answered with a layup on a pass by Garret Keyhani '26, but the Ephs used a 7-0 rally for a 44-36 cushion with 11:11 left. 
  • Morgan buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the Continentals' deficit to five points with 10:33 remaining. 
  • After trading baskets, Williams' Nate Karren hit two big free throws to stretch the Ephs' lead to seven points at 50-43 with 7:02 to go. 
  • Williams took off on a 19-4 run for its largest lead of 20 points at 67-47 with just 1:17 left to play. 
  • Hamilton jumped out to a 7-0 lead topped by a Christian McDaniel '24 floater with 17:50 left in the first half. 
  • The Ephs responded with back-to-back 3-pointers and a pair at the line for an 8-7 advantage with 14:59 on the clock. Williams extended its lead on a traditional three-point play by Hudson Hansen with 13:43 to go. 
  • Williams sparked a 12-4 run for a double-digit lead at 23-13 with 10:28 left. 
  • Morgan hit a layup and completed the three-point play at the line to trail by four points at 24-20. 
  • Nate Karren pushed Williams' lead back up to six points on a jumper, but the Continentals used a 9-0 run capped by a reverse layup by Morgan to hold a 29-26 lead with 3:12 to go. Keyhani, Nate Raub '27 and Morgan all scored during the spurt. 
  • Williams responded with the next five points for a 31-29 advantage with 2:27 left to play. 
  • The Continentals closed out the half on a successful trip at the charity stripe by Teja Singh '25 for a 34-33 edge at the break. 
  • Hamilton shot 30 percent (18-60) from the field and went 7-for-13 at the line. 
  • Williams shot 42.6 percent (20-47) from the floor, including 5 of 15 from 3-point range, and went 22-for-30 at the charity stripe. 
  • The Ephs owned a 40-37 edge on the glass.  
Notes 
  • Williams (20-5 overall) is ranked 25th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Ephs advance to the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. 
  • The Ephs defeated Hamilton 64-63 on Jan. 6 in Chandler Gymnasium. 
  • Morgan recorded 23 points, eight rebounds and made a team-best three steals. He is four points shy of 1,000 for his career.
  • Singh tallied 13 points, seven rebounds and a team-best four assists. 
  • Keyhani finished with eight boards. 
  • Owen Kane '25 grabbed five rebounds and passed out two assists. 
  • Prowitt-Smith grabbed 13 rebounds -- all on the defensive end -- for the double-double. 
  • Roughley came up with three steals. 
  • Karren had 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. 
  • Alex Lee added nine points and three assists.  
Season Recap
Hamilton finished its season with an overall record of 11-14. The Continentals tied for seventh place in the conference standings with a 4-6 record, and were the eighth seed for the championship.
