Field hockey falls to No. 1 Middlebury 5-2 in NESCAC quarters

Cooper '28 and Duserick '27 scored for the Continentals in their season finale

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College's Caroline Segal scored two goals and the Panthers defeated the Hamilton College Continentals 5-2 in a 2024 NESCAC Field Hockey Championship quarterfinal at Middlebury's Peter Kohn Field on Saturday, Nov. 2.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton, which was seeded eighth for the championship, finished its season with an overall record of 7-9.
  • The top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 1 Panthers (15-1 overall) host the NESCAC semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 9 and the conference final on Sunday, Nov. 10. Middlebury's semifinal opponent is to be determined.
 

How It Happened

  • Segal gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with 6:10 left in the first quarter on an assist by Lilly Branka, and Georgianne Defeo made it 2-0 with 9:36 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Continentals cut their deficit in half 46 seconds later on a penalty corner. The ball was inserted to Claire Tratnyek '26 and she passed to Evelyn Butorac '27 on the right wing. Butorac swept a right-handed shot that Eleanor Cooper '28 tipped into the back of the cage.
  • Hanna Medwar restored Middlebury's two-goal cushion with 9:09 to go in the third quarter on an assist by Branka. Segal pushed the advantage to 4-1 with 47 seconds left in the third.
  • Hamilton capitalized on another corner in the closing seconds of the quarter. Alden Duserick '27 sent the ball towards the cage from the right wing, it pinballed off a defender near the left post, and eluded the goalkeeper with 14 seconds remaining.
  • The Panthers' Emily Stone completed the scoring with 1:59 to go in the fourth quarter.

  • Cooper scored her first collegiate goal.
  • Butorac picked up her second assist this season.
  • Duserick collected her first points of 2024.
  • Abby Griffin '26 made a career-high nine saves despite only playing the first half.
  • Kelly Janssen '28 relieved Griffin at the start of the third quarter and stopped three shots.
  • Morgan Clarke '28 came up with two defensive saves and is tied for third in the NESCAC with six.
  • Isabelle Nahon '27 registered her second defensive stop this fall and Kenna White '28 made her first.
  • Madeline DiLemme and Izzy Redzic combined to stop two shots for Middlebury.
  • The Panthers held a 32-5 shot advantage and were awarded 20 corners to the Continentals' two.
  • Hamilton converted both of its penalty corner opportunities into goals.
