GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College's Alem Duratovic tied the score at 2-2 in the 89th minute and the Owls advanced on penalty kicks, 4-3, against the Hamilton College Continentals in a 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship second round match at Kenyon's Mavec Field on Saturday, Nov. 16.
How It Happened
- Hamilton got on the board in the 17th minute on a goal by Adam Molusis '27. The Continentals earned a free kick about 45 yards out near the sideline after Patrick Ferrare '27 was fouled. Jude Rouhana '25 took the kick, sending a perfect ball into the center of the box. Kenyon goalkeeper Jack Pedreschi rushed off his line to try and clear the ball, but it was directed toward the bottom-right corner of the six-yard box by Luke Peplowski '25. Molusis pursued the loose ball and followed through with a header into the middle of an empty net.
- Kenyon responded less than six minutes later with a goal by Lawrence Taylor. The Owls maintained possession in their defensive third before transitioning through midfield. After a wide pass along the near sideline, Hayato Ishii outran his defender, moved into the box and delivered a centering pass to Taylor who was able to execute the finish from the front doorstep.
- The Continentals regained the lead with 5:39 remaining in the first half. Hamilton looked to score from its third corner kick, but the ball was nodded away. Molusis sprinted for possession and slipped a short pass to Peplowski, who was positioned at the far side of the 18-yard box. Peplowski juked his defender, cut toward the end line and whipped a cross that grazed the fingertips of Pedreschi. The ball sailed to the back post toward a sea of white jerseys, but Griffin Weidner '26 charged in and powered a header into the back of the net for a 2-1 advantage.
- Hamilton nearly struck again in the 79th minute when Jameson Mannix '26 unleashed a missile from the top-left corner of the 18-yard box, but it brushed over the top of the crossbar.
- With time ticking away, Kenyon found the equalizer with just 1:44 left. The Owls earned a free kick from about 40 yards out and with the box crowded, Kenyon capitalized on goalkeeper Pedreschi's height advantage. Pedreschi managed to get his head on the ball, sending it into traffic. Duratovic picked up the seconds and nailed a rolling shot into the lower-right corner of the net.
- Kenyon's Isaac Cortez fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box with 36 seconds left in the first overtime period, but it was blocked by Luca McAdams '25.
- Kenyon had a golden goal opportunity in the opening minutes of the second overtime after a Hamilton handball just outside the top line of the 18-yard box. The Continentals remained calm and built a massive wall as Duratovic's attempt went high.
- After 20 minutes of overtime, the match was decided by penalty kicks.
- Kenyon replaced Pedreschi for Owen Boukalik at the start of the shootout.
- Hamilton outshot Kenyon 12-11.
