Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Jim Taylor

Volleyball wins first set but eventually falls to Colby in four

Stimson '25 reached double digits in kills for the fifth time this season for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Colby College's Marjorie Johnson led all players with 17 kills and posted a .394 hitting percentage as the Mules defeated the Hamilton College Continentals in four sets (28-30, 25-18, 25-13, 25-16) inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday, Oct. 4.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (3-8, 0-4 NESCAC) dropped their fourth straight match.
  • Colby (13-1, 3-0), which is receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll, won its 12th consecutive match.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton outlasted the Mules in a back-and-forth first set. Colby held a 28-27 edge but a service error by the Mules tied the score. Kathryn Fox '27 and Caitlin Allen '27 blocked an attack attempt for a 29-28 Continentals advantage, and the duo stifled another hitting attempt to close out the set.
  • Hamilton seemed like it was poised to win another set as the Continentals had a 14-13 edge in the second. Colby ran off the next five points and led the rest of the way. A kill by Sydney Bopp closed out the set with another five-point run for the Mules.
  • Colby jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set and stayed in front for the duration. Blocks by Cyanne Jones and Sarah Friedrichs gave the Mules the clinching point.
  • Colby put Hamilton in another early hole in the fourth set by recording five of the first seven points. The Continentals never recovered, and a Bopp kill ended the match.

Notes

  • Drew Stimson '25 topped Hamilton with 13 kills, 15 points and a .478 hitting percentage. It was the fifth time this season she posted double-digit kills in a match.
  • Elodie McGeiver '27 chipped in nine kills.
  • Pati Cerda '26 handed out 21 assists.
  • Allen and Fox helped lead the defense with three blocks apiece.
  • Cate Iven '25 served four aces, which was her highest total since she smacked five against Bates on Oct. 14, 2022.
  • Ayzlinn Trefren '28 came up with 14 digs and is ninth in the NESCAC with 3.71 per set.
  • LJ Grant collected a double-double with 14 kills and 15 assists for the Mules.
  • Bopp contributed a match-high four blocks and Reese Loyd led the defense in the back with 23 digs.
  • Gabby Grujic and Jordan Lee passed out 28 and 27 assists, respectively.
