Volleyball outlasted by Cortland in five, Carman ’24 with 15 kills

Allen ’27 tallies nine blocks for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – SUNY Cortland's Anna Pilkey posted 15 kills and 15 digs in the Red Dragons' five-set win (25-14, 22-25, 18-25, 27-25, 15-13) against the Hamilton College Continentals in non-conference action inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday evening.
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton dropped to 5-5 overall with its third straight loss. 
  • Cortland, which is a member of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), improved to 12-2.  
How It Happened
  • The Red Dragons started hot in the first set with a 6-1 spurt and led the whole way. 
  • The Continentals turned the tables in the second set with their own 6-1 lead and never trailed. Cortland pulled within one point at 20-19, but Hamilton ran off the next four. Block assists by Caitlin Allen '27 and Melissa Morelli '24 closed out the set. 
  • Hamilton made a statement in the third set with an 8-1 start powered by a kill and two blocks by Allen. The Continentals eventually held a commanding 17-3 lead and Kate Carman '24 ended the set with a kill for a two sets-to-one advantage.
  • The Red Dragons trailed 19-15 in the fourth set after two kills by Summer McClintic '24. Cortland rallied to tie the score with four straight points, and another four-point run put the Red Dragons up 24-21. Hamilton fought off four set points as Drew Stimson '25 pounded a kill and blocked an attack attempt. The Red Dragons finally ended the set on a kill and a block on a Hamilton attack attempt. 
  • Elodie McGeiver '27 hammered a kill and gave the Continentals a 7-5 lead in the deciding fifth set. Cortland countered with three straight points on three kills by Allie Sturgess for an 8-7 advantage. Hamilton held a 10-9 edge after an attack error by the Red Dragons, but Cortland took control with a 5-0 run for a 14-10 cushion. McClintic and Carman combined for a trio of kills before Pilkey ended the match with a kill. 
Notes
  • Allen proved big at the net with a season-best nine blocks. 
  • Carman boasted 15 kills and is fourth in the NESCAC with 3.41 per set.
  • Stimson recorded 14 kills and just two errors in 26 attempts for a .462 hitting percentage. 
  • McClintic tallied 10 kills and 14 digs. 
  • Morelli dished out 45 assists, was credited with 11 digs and came up with five blocks. 
  • Rylee Bergeron '26 paced Hamilton with 21 digs.  
  • Sturgess led Cortland with four of its 12 aces. 
  • Meadow Wittman and Ryan Hinshaw passed out 22 assists apiece.

The Continentals host NESCAC foe Tufts University (6-5, 1-2 NESCAC) on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.
