Volleyball splits two matches, defeats St. Lawrence in four sets

Carman ’24 tied the school record for a match with 29 kills against the Saints

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Hamilton College Continentals dropped a five-set NESCAC thriller to Williams (22-25, 25-15, 27-25, 22-25, 17-15) before bouncing back with a 3-1 non-conference triumph against St. Lawrence University (10-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23) inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton's overall record moved to 5-2 (1-1 NESCAC). 
  • Williams (7-0, 2-0 NESCAC) received votes in the AVCA Division III Coaches Poll. 
  • St. Lawrence, which is a member of the Liberty League, dipped to 2-6 overall. 
How It Happened (Williams) 
  • Down 8-5 in the deciding set, the Continentals took a 9-8 lead after a 4-0 spurt. Hamilton still held a 13-11 edge before the Ephs answered with a 3-0 rally and claimed a crucial 14-13 advantage. The Ephs and Continentals traded points before Williams picked up the win on two consecutive Hamilton attack errors. 
  • The Continentals dropped two of the first three sets, but battled for a win in the fourth set. Trailing 19-18, Hamilton rallied for four straight points and a 22-19 lead. The Continentals claimed three of the last five points on kills by Drew Stimson '25 and Kate Carman '24, and a bad set by the Ephs. The set featured 11 ties. 
  • The Ephs went on a 7-0 run for a 15-10 advantage in the third set. Stimson knotted the score at 18-18 apiece after a trio of kills and a Williams attack error. The Continentals were strong at the net with kills by Kendall Scholz '27, Caitlin Allen '27, Stimson and Carman, and took a 24-23 lead. Hamilton had two match points, but the Ephs ran off the last three points for the win. 
  • Williams jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set and stayed in front by at least three points the rest of the set. 
  • Hamilton fought back in the opening set after trailing 20-13 following a service error. The Continentals scored nine of the next 10 points for a 22-21 edge. Hamilton closed out the set with monster kills by Stimson and Carman, and finally block assists by Allen and Carman.  
Notes (Williams) 
  • Carman paced Hamilton with 17 kills and added five blocks.  
  • Stimson boasted a .444 hitting percentage with a career-best 16 kills on 27 attempts and chipped in five blocks. 
  • Melissa Morelli '24 registered a season-high 43 assists and stuffed a career-best four blocks. 
  • Rylee Bergeron '26 recorded a season-best 24 digs. Bergeron is fifth in the conference with 4.42 digs per set. 
  • Scholz chipped in a season-high 19 digs. 
  • Elodie McGeiver '27 tallied a season-best 10 kills.
  • Hannah Cillo '24 led the Continentals with three service aces. 
  • Lauren Kauppila guided Williams with 52 assists and four aces. 
  • Celia Adams recorded a team-best 18 kills for the Ephs.  
 
How It Happened (St. Lawrence)
  • The Continentals controlled the pace early in the fourth set with an 8-3 lead after a seven-point run and never trailed, although the Saints pulled within one several times. A kill by Carman finally ended the set and the match. 
  • After four early ties, Hamilton made a statement with a seven-point spurt and gained a 14-8 lead in the crucial third set. The Saints were able to close the gap to 21-20, but Carman slammed back-to-back kills for a 23-21 advantage, and the Continentals claimed the set after a St. Lawrence service error and attack error. 
  • In the second set the Continentals built a 13-9 cushion after rallying for five straight points. Hamilton held at least a three-point lead the rest of the set. 
  • The Saints cruised by 15 points in the opening set after breaking things open with a 5-0 run for a 10-3 advantage.  
Notes (St. Lawrence) 
  • Carman tied a school record with 29 kills in a match and is second in the NESCAC with 3.81 kills per set. 
  • Bergeron served three aces and recorded 17 digs.
  • Chiara Morley-McLaughlin '24 and Stimson tallied three blocks apiece. 
  • Morelli handed out 34 assists and added 13 digs. She is fourth in the NESCAC 7.81 assists per set. 
  • Vivian Zymeck led the Saints with 17 kills. 
  • Maggie Layman served seven of St. Lawrence's 13 aces.
  • The Continentals defeated the Saints in three sets just one week ago in Canton, N.Y.
Next Match 
The Continentals return to NESCAC action at Middlebury College (3-3, 1-1 NESCAC) on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.
