No. 22 women's lacrosse tripped up by No. 7 Wesleyan

Lane '24 posted eight draw controls, six ground balls and four caused turnovers

CLINTON, N.Y. – Wesleyan University shut out Hamilton College for the last 21-plus minutes and the Cardinals defeated the Continentals 12-7 in a NESCAC game played at Hamilton's Steuben Field on a sunny and mild Saturday, April 1.
 

Season Update

  • The nationally ranked No. 22 Continentals (4-5, 1-4 NESCAC) are winless in four tries against ranked teams.
  • No. 7 Wesleyan's (7-1, 3-1) only loss was by a goal at Colby College on March 19.
 

How It Happened

  • Olivia Chiota '24 pulled Hamilton into a 7-7 tie with 6:26 left in the third quarter on a goal scored while the Continentals were down a player due to a yellow card.
  • The Cardinals responded with four goals in a span of two minutes and 21 seconds late in the third. Three of the goals were scored on free-position shots.
  • Brooke Nelson put Wesleyan in the lead for good with 5:28 remaining and Olivia Lai scored the next two goals. Laura Baine made it 11-7 with 3:07 to go.
  • Nelson wrapped up the scoring on the Cardinals' sixth free-position goal with 7:52 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Wesleyan led 4-1 after one quarter and 7-2 midway through the second.
  • Alana King '24 started a string of Hamilton goals with 1:39 remaining in the half.
  • Maddigan Leifer '26 pulled the Continentals within three on a free-position goal with just two-tenths of a second to go.
  • Aine Cleary '25 kept things rolling for Hamilton with a free-position goal 3:22 into the third quarter.
  • The Continentals won the ensuing draw control and Sarah Creamer '26 made it 7-6 with a goal on another free-position shot with 10:29 left in the third.
 

Notes

  • King is second on Hamilton's roster with 14 goals and added her first assist this season.
  • Abby Smith '24 scored her second goal in as many games.
  • Cleary notched her team-leading 27th goal.
  • Creamer has 10 goals and is second on the team with 16 points.
  • Sarah Moore '23 was credited with her first assist this season and three caused turnovers.
  • Meghan Lane '24 won eight draws, caused four turnovers and tied a career high with six ground balls.
  • Carly West '25 came up with four caused turnovers.
  • Maeve Luparello '23 started in goal and made four saves.
  • Casey Fiore '24 relieved Luparello after the first half and stopped six shots.
  • Lai and Kate Balicki scored three goals apiece for the Cardinals.
  • Nelson had two goals and an assist, and Baine ended up with a goal and two helpers.
  • Bridget Horst won five draws, Kiara Tangney caused three turnovers and Molly Greer scooped up four ground balls.
  • Abby Wolk turned away two shots in the first half and Izzy Weintraub made six saves in the second half.
  • Wesleyan scored six goals on 10 free-position shots.

The Continentals host No. 1 Middlebury College (9-0, 5-0) for another conference contest on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
