No. 6 women's hockey comes up short in quest for NESCAC title

Continentals lost 5-0 against fourth-ranked Amherst in the conference final

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College's Alyssa Xu scored two goals and added an assist in the Mammoths' 5-0 win against the Hamilton College Continentals in the 2023 New England Small College Athletic Conference Women's Hockey Championship final at Amherst's Orr Rink on Saturday night.

Season Update
  • Nationally ranked No. 6 Hamilton (20-5-2 overall) was the No. 2 seed for the championship. The Continentals will have to wait to find out if they receive one of the three at-large bids to the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Hockey Championship. The selection show airs on NCAA.com on Sunday, March 5 at 8:30 p.m.
  • The fourth-ranked Mammoths (24-3-0) were the top seed for the championship. Amherst earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA championship by winning its fifth NESCAC title.

How It Happened
  • The Mammoths took control of the final with their special teams. Avery Flynn scored during a 6-on-4 advantage with 6:20 left in the first period. Amherst was already on a power play with 6:40 remaining when a delayed penalty was called on Hamilton, and the Mammoths pulled their goaltender for an extra skater.
  • Amherst held a 9-1 shot advantage after the first 20 minutes.
  • Flynn had the assist on Xu's first goal at 3:27 of the second period.
  • Carley Daly made it 3-0 with a short-handed goal at 11:42 of the second.
  • Xu scored unassisted on an empty net with 1:59 to go in the third period.
  • Marie-Eve Marleau closed out the scoring with 13 seconds left.

  • Evie Sheridan '26 stopped 15 shots for the Continentals.
  • The teams split a pair of games at Amherst on the first weekend of the regular season back in mid-November. The Mammoths won the opener 4-0 before Hamilton came back with a 2-0 victory the next day.
  • The Continentals were playing in the NESCAC final for the first time.
  • Hamilton has its first 20-win season in team history.
