Softball splits two non-conference games in Florida

Tansky ’25 led the Continentals to a 7-5 win against Luther College in Sunday’s opener

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Hamilton College's Emma Tansky '25 tallied three hits and collected the win in the circle against the Luther College Norse as the Continentals split a pair of non-conference games at DiamondPlex on Sunday.  
 
Hamilton (6-4 overall) defeated Luther 7-5 before the Continentals were edged 7-6 by University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Hamilton wraps up its Florida trip with non-conference games against Hope College and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Monday, March 20 back at DiamondPlex. The first pitch of the opener is scheduled for 9 a.m.

How It Happened
  • The Continentals started strong with three runs in the first inning. Tansky reached on an infield hit and Alison Zorn '26 singled through the right side. With two outs, Ella Heftved '25 drove Tansky home with a double to left center. Charlie Quinn '25 drove in Zorn and Heftved with a hard-hit single up the middle. 
  • Hamilton added two more runs in the second. Natalie Beebe '24 had the Continentals' only hit of the inning with a liner down the line in right field that plated Tansky and Katlynn McGivney '23. 
  • Luther cut its deficit to 5-2 with a pair of runs on four hits in the third. The Norse scored another run on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fourth. 
  • Hamilton countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on two hits and an error. McGivney led off with an infield single and advanced to second on an error. Tansky followed with a bunt single to third base. With runners on the corners, Zorn laid down a beautiful squeeze that allowed McGivney to score. Tansky scored Hamilton's second run on a wild pitch. 
  • Luther took a run back in the fifth inning on three hits. 
  • Down 7-4 with one out, Sydney Schultz roped a double to left center for the Norse, and Riley Sauser scored Schultz on a single up the middle. Tansky got the next two batters to pop up and end the rally and the game. 
Notes
  • Alessandra Priante '24 also recorded a single for the Continentals. 
  • Beebe and Quinn drove in two runs each. 
  • Tansky pitched a complete game and collected six strikeouts. She leads Hamilton's staff with 30 strikeouts. 
  • Schultz led Luther with three hits. 
  • Katie Brennan and Chloe Wagner had two hits apiece for the Norse. 
  • Luther, a member of the American Rivers Conference, moved to 9-2 overall.

How It Happened
  • Hamilton jumped on top with one run on two hits in the second inning. Beebe led off with a single down the right field line and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Alexis Mayer '26. Madison Hinojos '24 singled to right field and Lydia Mirabito '26 scored Beebe on a fielder's choice. 
  • Platteville answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a hit and an error. 
  • The Pioneers held a 5-1 lead after scoring two runs in the third inning and again in the fourth. 
  • The Continentals had their best inning in the fifth with four runs on four hits and an error. Samantha Smith '23 singled through the left side, McGivney reached on a fielder's choice and Tansky's single down the left field line scored Smith. Zorn reached first on an error and McGivney scored on the throw. Beebe singled up the middle and drove Tansky home, and Mayer tied the score with another single up the middle that brought Zorn home.
  • The Pioneers regained the lead with one run in the fifth and another on a solo homer in the sixth. 
  • Mayer singled down the left field line and advanced to second on an error with one out in the seventh. Mirabito smacked a two-out hit through the left side and drove in Mayer. The next batter popped up to the shortstop and ended the game. 
Notes
  • Beebe and Mayer collected two hits apiece. 
  • Mirabito drove in a team-best two runs. 
  • The Continentals tallied 11 hits, all if which were singles. 
  • Melissa Dietz hit two solo homers and Amanda Stanczuk and Taylor Roughen had two singles apiece for the Pioneers.
  • Roughen led Platteville with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Carlie Jo Brownlee earned the win in the circle allowing one unearned run on four hits with two strikeouts. 
  • Wisconsin-Platteville, a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, improved to 4-1 overall.
