WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Hamilton College's
Hank Morgan '25 led all players with 19 points and the Continentals posted a 71-48 win against the Tufts University Jumbos in a 2023 NESCAC Men's Basketball Championship semifinal at Williams College's Chandler Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
How It Happened
- Hamilton took the lead for good with a 10-0 run midway through the first half as the Continentals turned a 16-15 deficit into a 25-16 advantage. Tufts didn't get closer than five points the rest of the way.
- Trailing 8-4, Owen Kane '25 buried a 3-ball and cut Hamilton's deficit to 8-7 with 15:08 left.
- The Jumbos countered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Tyler Aronson for a 14-9 advantage.
- Over the span of the next four minutes, Hank Morgan '25 and Garret Keyhani '26 knocked down shots from beyond the arc and gave Hamilton its first lead at 15-14 with 10:36 left.
- Kane hit his second 3-pointer of the contest for a 20-16 lead with 6:58 remaining. Conner Rood '23 converted an old-fashioned 3-point play and Teja Singh '25 nailed a jumper for a 25-16 advantage with 4:43 to go.
- Tufts responded with baskets on consecutive possessions and cut Hamilton's lead to 25-20 with 3:34 remaining.
- The Continentals closed out the first stanza with a 9-1 run for a 34-21 cushion at the break. Liam Regan '23, Patrick Mogan '23 and Morgan all scored during the spurt.
- Morgan and Eric Anderson '23 opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers and stretched the Continentals' lead to 40-21 with 15:43 left.
- Rood forced a Jumbos turnover and took it coast-to-coast for a fastbreak layup that gave Hamilton a 23-point lead at 46-23 with 13:48 left.
- Tufts' Jay Dieterle hit a shot from 3-point land and cut the Jumbos' deficit to 51-35 with 9:05 remaining.
- Dylan Thoerner nailed a shot from beyond the arc and Tufts trailed by 15 points at 55-40 with 7:08 to go.
- Keyhani gave Hamilton its largest lead of 26 points at 69-43 on a free throw with 1:56 left.
- Yashiya Crespin '26 finished Hamilton's victory with a pair at the line with 1:02 remaining.
- Hamilton held a double-digit lead for the entire second half.
- Hamilton registered 17 points off turnovers to Tufts' three, even though both teams committed 13.
- The Continentals shot 5 of 11 from 3-point range in the first half.
- Hamilton shot 42.1 percent (24-57) from the floor, including 34.8 percent (8-23) from 3-point range, and 62.5 percent (15-24) at the charity stripe.
- Hamilton owned a 47-34 edge on the glass.
- The Continentals dished out 15 assists.
- Tufts shot 27.1 percent (16-59) from the floor and 10-for-13 at the line.
Notes
- No. 2 seed Hamilton (18-8 overall) will advance to the NESCAC final for the first time since 2019 and the second time since they joined the conference for basketball in the 2011-12 season.
- Tufts is 19-7 and will wait until Monday to find out if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA championship. The Jumbos were the fifth seed for the NESCAC championship.
- Tufts edged the Continentals 57-54 back on Jan. 14 in Medford, Mass.
- Hamilton is 8-1 since that loss to the Jumbos.
- Morgan hit 8 of 12 shots from the floor, including 3 of 3 from long range, and collected a season-best seven rebounds.
- Singh chipped in 13 points and seven boards.
- Kane finished with eight points while Rood tallied seven, grabbed a team-best nine boards and blocked two shots.
- Mogan handed out a career-high nine assists in just 19 minutes.
- Aronson and Dieterle scored nine points apiece for Tufts.
- Theo Henry contributed eight points from off the bench.
- Joshua Bernstein registered eight points and three blocks.
